Our highly collaborative team is seeking a Medical Laboratory Technologist for the Virology department. This is a full-time permanent position, Monday to Friday
(Morning shifts). Occasional Saturdays are also required.

MEDICAL LABORATORY TECHNOLOGIST



Responsibility


The Medical Laboratory Technologist will perform routine diagnostic laboratory and quality assurance procedures, and special tests which require independent judgement and responsibility with minimum supervision, and in a timely manner. Your sound knowledge of principles, techniques and Instrumentation will help you recognize problems, identify causes, create alternatives, and determine solutions. You will be expected to perform all procedures to conform to health and safety standards.

DUTIES



Perform routine, "special" and/or complicated tests in those specialties and subspecialties in which qualified by education, training and experience. Maintain and monitor all equipment, reagents and supplies to ensure optimum performance at all times. Verify all quality control results to ensure that they fall within the established limits of acceptability before patient results are reports to the ordering physician Ensure compliance with all quality management practices in the laboratory. Attend to all matters of concern brought to your attention by taking appropriate corrective actions as soon as possible. Alert the charge technologist or laboratory supervisor of all unusual events and abnormal test findings. Assist in the "in-service" training and supervision of laboratory technical assistants/technicians. Ensure that proficiency testing samples are processed in the same manner as patient samples. Procure specimens from patients only at the request of physicians by following the techniques and using supplies as indicated in the "Specimen Collection Manual" of this laboratory. Keep accurate records of pertinent information or specimens and tests processed by you. Follow all safety policies and procedures, as outlined in the "Laboratory Safety Manual". Carry out routine preventive maintenance programs (if required in the work shift) on all equipment, (manual, semi-automated, and fully automated) used in each department of the laboratory, by following maintenance schedules as established for each equipment and keeping detailed records of what was done, when it was done and the initials of the person who actually performed the maintenance. Perform tests and procedures for which the laboratory is licensed, without change or deviations as described in each laboratory section. Perform "initial" and "external" quality controls on each test procedure (where applicable) by following the policies and instructions as described in the manuals. Record all readings, calculations and results obtained on patient tests, quality control material and standards as observed by you during performance of your duties. Verify your work, by initialing and dating all work sheets, reports, records and quality control results, etc. at time of documentation. Repeat or confirm all abnormal results (tests and controls) before reporting them. Maintain proper records of all tests, quality controls, equipment maintenance, continuing education, etc., as carried out in your section(s) of the laboratory. Sign and date all records and documents which have been either prepared or verified by yourself. Read relevant journals and periodicals and attend refresher courses, seminars or workshops and document attendance. Use and wear safety equipment provided. Refuse to use things that endanger self or others. Report absence or defects in equipment and devices. Do not remove safety devices without replacing them. Perform other duties and responsibilities, technical and non-technical, as may be reasonably assigned.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATION



Must be registered with the CMLTO in good standing.

Previous clinical laboratory experience in a hospital or community laboratory setting is an asset.

CONTINUING EDUCATION



Responsible to keep current with any pertinent and applicable laws and regulations.
You must attend and document attendance at relevant continuing education programs as mandated by the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario (CMLTO) and other accreditation bodies as required.

Mandatory annual WHMIS training.

You will keep up to date of trends and continuously compare internal processes with industry standards. This will support the company's core value of the pursuit of excellence through benchmarking.
