Position Summary
:
In order to provide information to enable clinical decision making, performs routine and complex laboratory analyses and assumes appropriate responsibility for problem solving and teaching. Works primarily with adults and patient specimens. Must exhibit working knowledge of lab care standards for pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients/specimens. Must adhere to universal safety precautions, while generating accurate and precise results.
Responsibilities:
Laboratory Procedures and Maintenance
Performs routine laboratory analyses according to the needs of the department and hospital.
Utilizes quality control procedures on a routine basis according to established procedures (Westgard rules).
Recognizes problems, attempts to identify the cause, determines and implements solutions.
Performs routine safety checks, preventative maintenance on instrumentation, and reagent checks.
Performs special analyses, which require a complex network of steps and/or a summary, conclusion, evaluation, or value judgment in conjunction with the Team Leader.
Maintains in-depth knowledge of techniques, principles, and instruments and their interrelationship as well as physiological conditions affecting test results.
Maintains a clean and orderly work area and follows proper safety protocol for handling and disposal of bio-hazardous and chemically hazardous materials and wastes.
Maintains working knowledge of laboratory computer system and utilizes the system efficiently, i.e. verifying results, keeping routine records.
Respects and protects confidential data regarding patient information.
Quality Improvement
Keeps overall working knowledge of department current by attending department meetings/reading department minutes, memos, and hospital communiques.
Makes suggestions, recommendations to laboratory supervision for continued improvement of laboratory services, aligned with SMGH Lean Management System programme.
Evaluates new test procedures and new equipment and suggest modifications in conjunction with the Senior MLT.
Performs calculations and prepares reagents for use in routine and special tests.
Continuous Improvement
Participates in continuing education and may present periodic in-service programs.
Teaches other employees, students and shadowers in both theory and technique.
Adapt communication and interpersonal skills to deal effectively with patients and their families, co-workers, physicians, volunteers and others within our health care community.
Demonstrate values and a commitment to foster a healthy, supportive work environment dedicated to delivering a high-quality care experience though compassion, innovation and respect.
Effectively apply organizational and time management skills to prioritize workload, to problem solve, and to adapt to frequent interruptions and change.

Position Requirements:
Medical Laboratory Science diploma or degree.
Active CMLTO registration in all core lab competencies.
Minimum one (1) - two (2) years' experience in a Medical Laboratory.
Knowledge of preanalytical, analytical, and post analytical principles.
Knowledge of quality system essentials and how they apply in medical laboratories.
Fluency in Meditech applications and Microsoft office.
Compliance with accreditation standards and professional practice guidelines applicable to SMGH and the Integrated Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine, examples are but not limited to Accreditation Canada and IQMH OLA and ISO 15189 Accreditation standards.
Successfully able to perform their function in accordance with prescribed standards that focuses on the priority of People Safety and the delivery of the highest standard of Quality Care.
Demonstrate the physical and mental capabilities necessary for proper and efficient performance of the essential duties of the position
Preferred Requirements:
Previous use of Beckman Coulter equipment
Previous use of Document Control Systems
Experience in blood banking
