DESCRIPTION:



Perform specific molecular or cytogenetic laboratory analyses requiring technical skills and knowledge. Under the supervision of the Laboratory Director or delegate exercises judgment regarding testing on defined clinical specimens to assist physicians in diagnosing, monitoring, treating and preventing disease.



Within this role, the employee is accountable for contributing to the delivery of the Kingston Health Science Centre strategy. As an employee, one must demonstrate an awareness of and be responsible for actively promoting and supporting patient and family centered engagement and care in all we do.


PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES:


Performs specimen handling and processing. Under the supervision of a Medical Laboratory Technologist (MLT), analyzes and provides preliminary results for specific laboratory testing in Molecular Genetics or Cytogenetics. Performs repeat testing when required. Responsible for entering assay results into the Laboratory Information System (LIS) for sign off and release by the Laboratory Director or Associate Directors. Performs Quality Control and Quality Assurance procedures to ensure laboratory testing meets established requirements and standards. Ensures efficient use of laboratory supplies and reagents. Monitors supplies inventory to ensure adequate supply is maintained. Notifies appropriate person when re-orders are required. Performs and documents routine equipment maintenance and performs minor troubleshooting procedures. Provides assistance to Pathologists, Laboratory Physicians and Laboratory Scientists in performing certain delegated medical acts related to the laboratory discipline in which the incumbent is assigned. The Employee will adhere to the worker responsibilities as set out in the Occupational Health & Safety Act, hospital safety policies, and department/unit established procedures at all times. Where possible, take corrective action to address a hazard, otherwise report the unresolved hazard, dangerous circumstance, unsafe situation to self, other co-workers, or the community, to their supervisor. Should the employee suffer a workplace injury or illness, he/she will advise their supervisor; actively participate in identifying and resolving the underlying cause(s), and participates in early and safe return to work as per Workplace Safety & Insurance Act. Understands and is familiar with all pertinent KHSC policies and procedures including those relating to workplace conduct. Complies with the KHSC Commitment to uphold the Workplace Conduct and Reporting of Inappropriate Conduct policy and behaves in a manner that is consistent with the guiding principles and expectations.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:


Applicants for the position of Genetics Medical Laboratory Technician in the Department of Genetics Services are required to either have:

(1) Bachelor of Science degree with two or more university-level genetics courses (either in Human Genetics, Molecular Genetics and/or Cytogenetics) OR

(2) Previously registered as a Genetics Medical Laboratory Technologist from the College of Medical Laboratory Technology of Ontario
Recent two years laboratory experience, including one year with genetics techniques are required (laboratory experience in research, a training program or a clinical laboratory setting). Post graduate degree in genetics or molecular pathology will be favorably considered, but is optional. Assay trouble shooting - the successful applicant requires a strong background in molecular or cytogenetic techniques with an in-depth understanding of a variety of assays including (but not limited to) Sanger sequencing, next generation sequencing, micro array, PCR, F.I.S.H. and Chromosome analysis. QA/QC issues - the applicant will need to understand appropriate quality metrics and know how to proceed if the metrics do no meet standards. The candidate will need to identify some aspects of the genetic data generated and know which biomarkers require further investigations according to established laboratory reflex practices. Proficient computer skills with experience in Cytovision or Next-generation Sequencing Software an advantage. Excellent organizational and time management skills. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Demonstrated analytical and critical thinking skills. Ability for independent action and problem solving The ability to do detailed work and maintain a high level of accuracy. Integrity and professional attitude. Must be able to work with specialized equipment and instruments. Safety; staff will comply with safety instructions in accordance with the safety manuals, Occupational Health and Safety Regulations, CNSC Regulations, manufacturer's instructions and all other safety regulations and best practice recommendations. Ability to attend work on a regular basis. Satisfactory criminal reference check and vulnerable sector search required
