The Department of Medical Genetics is one of 20 departments in the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry (FoMD). Senior staff in the department comprise Physicians, Scientists and Laboratory geneticists.
FoMD comprises 7 Research Institutes, and 6 Core facilities. Core facilities provide state-of-the-art research infrastructure and expertise (https://www.ualberta.ca/medicine/research/corefacilities/index.html).
The Department of Medical Genetics in the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry at the University of Alberta is seeking a tenure-track Medical Geneticist at the Assistant Professor rank or higher. The University of Alberta is one of Canada's Top 5 Universities and ranked in the top 100 worldwide. The Department collaborates with Alberta Health Services to provide up-to-date clinical and metabolic services to the Province of Alberta and the Northwest Territories. The Department has a team of 10 Clinical and Metabolic Physicians supported by genetic counsellors and genetic counselling assistants. The Department participates in a fully accredited Canadian College of Medical Geneticists training program.
Responsibilities:
The successful candidate will provide specialist consultative services for both inpatients and outpatients and will participate in developing and guiding strategies for improving the health and health care of Albertans. The Medical Geneticist will also participate fully in the University of Alberta academic teaching and training activities. The ideal candidate would also have a concrete interest in research and be willing to develop an independent research program.
Qualifications:
To ensure the highest level of quality for our patients and students, we are seeking applications from individuals with;

  • M.D. or equivalent degree and must hold or be eligible for permanent licensing in the province of Alberta,
  • specialist certification in medical genetics with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, or from the Canadian College of Medical Geneticist, or equivalent certification is considered
  • be eligible for an appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor or above at the University of Alberta;
  • PhD in an appropriate discipline, or a proven track record of successful independent research (e.g., lead authorship on peer-reviewed publications, documented grant funding as a principal investigator, or significant contributions to research protocols meeting ethical and methodological standards);
  • Candidates will also be considered if they possess comparable training and certification from other countries.
