Job Description


Overview:
As the Medical Fitness Administrator, you will identify medically at risk drivers, conduct and coordinate driving assessments and analyze complex medical information, to determine medical fitness to drive. In this role, you will independently make decisions and use professional discretion to implement interventions for medically at risk drivers including suspension, cancellation, declass and licensing restrictions in context of the medical standards and internal policy. Responsibilities:

  • Analyze, investigate, and interpret complex medical information, including medical specialist reports regarding client\xe2\x80\x99s fitness to drive.
  • Determine requirements for drivers who have:
    • Medical conditions that fail to meet the medical standards and require intervention such as suspension, cancellation, declass or restrictions.
    • Episodic and persistent impairments resulting from medical conditions affecting motor, cognitive, and sensory functions, i.e. cardiac, neurologic, endocrine, psychiatric, substance use and musculoskeletal disorders.
    • Unique medical circumstances that require individualized assessment and intervention.
  • Regularly liaise with physicians, optometrists and other medical specialists to investigate and clarify documentation provided regarding fitness to drive.
  • Develop strategies specific to the client\xe2\x80\x99s medical condition and applicable standards.
  • Collaborate on complex medical issues and seeks support for decisions in potentially contentious cases.
Qualifications:
  • Registered Nurse (RN) with current registration with the College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba.
  • Bachelor of Nursing (BN, BSN) from post-secondary college or university is an asset.
  • Four years nursing experience, of which is in an acute care setting, including critical care, emergency or critical care step-down unit.
  • Experience working with those with significant neurological and/or cardiac disorders and multiple medical conditions is an asset.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of cardiac and neurological conditions.
  • Demonstrated effective listening skills, empathy and appropriate counselling skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with strong critical thinking skills.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to deal effectively with confrontational clients and family members.
  • A valid driver\xe2\x80\x99s licence.
  • Access to a personal vehicle.
