The Office of Rural and Regional Health (ORRH) collaborates closely with educational partners throughout Alberta's Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, as well as rural and regional communities, to deliver medical education to undergraduate and postgraduate learners.
The Community Medical Education Program Administrator (MEPA) is designed to fulfill several key responsibilities. Principle among these is the administrative role supporting distributed medical education through Preclinical Networked Medical Education (PNME). PNME is a 6-week program that places 40-plus second-year medical students to complete their Gastroenterology & Nutrition (GI) and Reproductive Medicine & Urology (Repro) blocks in 9 rural/regional settings within Alberta.
The Community MEPA, reporting to the Team Lead, ORRH, will assist the Team Lead, ORRH, the Manager, Office of Education, the Administrator, Rural Programs, as well as program-specific educational Site Leads, to ensure the smooth operation of PNME. In addition, the Community MEPA will be responsible for coordinating the delivery of PNME with other rural medical education programs delivered in the same communities. Rural and regional Site Leads will be important collaborators in the coordination of clinical access for medical students and aligning their schedules with other medical learners who may be in the community simultaneously.
The Community Medical Education Program Administrator will collaborate with the Rural Community Engagement Coordinator and the Rural Faculty Liaison to assist in coordinating faculty development events and rural site visits. Occasional travel between rural and remote communities and Edmonton will be encouraged as per program requirements.
Additionally, secondary roles for the Community MEPA will be to liaise with the cohort of medical students at the U of A who participate in the Rural Medical Interest Group (RMIG) and the North of 60 club. These student groups are an important way for the ORRH to interact with students.
Finally, this position provides administrative support for key activities within the Office of Education (OoE), specifically for the J Albert Gilbert Chair for Medical Education (JAG) and the FoMD Education Awards Subcommittee (EAS). Key responsibilities include supporting the administration of medical education grants, summer student awards for medical education grants, and the visiting speakers' series. The position will work collaboratively with various Education Leads, who report to the Vice-Dean Education, to ensure the effective operation of both the JAG and the EAS. The position may also occasionally assist with administration of related research projects.
This position may require travel to communities across northwestern Alberta. It may involve long-distance driving in rural conditions and participation in community events during evenings or weekends.
