LifeLabs BC is seeking a Medical Microbiologist to join our Medical Scientific staff. The practice covers all of BC with most of the work concentrated in the Lower Mainland. Time will mostly be spent in our Surrey laboratory; occasional travel to Victoria may also be required.

This is a Full Time Onsite role based in Surrey, BC. This role is available starting October, 2023.

Core Responsibilities

  • The provision of all aspects of a community Medical Microbiologist consultative practice to our Surrey, Victoria and Kamloops laboratories. The practice includes general oversight and direction of bacteriology, mycology, parasitology and molecular diagnostics from the pre-analytical to analytical to post-analytical stages. Lifelabs has the largest patient services centre (sample collection sites) and lab courier network in British Columbia and also controls Excelleris Technologies, the leading distributor of patient test results in BC.
  • Provision of clinical consultations (generally by phone) to community physicians regarding the interpretation of microbiology tests and optimal diagnosis and management of infections and related conditions.
  • Working closely with partners and colleagues such as the BCCDC, other health authorities and the BC Lab Agency for research, Public Health initiatives and lab governance.
  • Supervision and teaching of trainees. LifeLabs\xe2\x80\x99 facilities are also affiliated with UBC as teaching sites. Residents from the Medical Microbiology post graduate training program rotate through our laboratories, offering opportunities to teach and supervise research projects. Other teaching is also encouraged and supported.
Minimum Qualification and Skills
  • Applicant should have an MD or equivalent, be certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in Medical Microbiology and be eligible for licensure with the BC College of Physicians and Surgeons
  • Applicants must be legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Strong problem solving skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work in cross-functional teams
