The
Mechanic's Assistant
works under the supervision of the
Mechanic
to assist with all mechanical duties in adherence to company safety standards and general company policies and procedures. This position reports to both the
Mechanic
and the management team at Biomed.
Job duties include, but are not limited to:
Assist mechanics in diagnosing and repairing mechanical issues on our fleet of commercial vehicles and trailers.
Assist mechanics in repairing and maintaining plant equipment such as wash stations, processing equipment, boilers, forklifts, tractors, etc.
Perform routine maintenance tasks, such as snow removal and grounds maintenance as well as general building maintenance.
Communicate with various departments regarding maintenance needs and requirements; responding to and completing maintenance requests.
Help with the inspection of vehicles to identify potential problems or safety concerns.
Communicate effectively with the mechanics/maintenance team regarding job duties and requirements.
Maintain well documented records of maintenance performed on all Biomed buildings, equipment and an organized workspace and inventory of mechanical and maintenance tools.
Requirements
High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
Class 5 driver's license.
Basic knowledge of automotive systems and mechanical principles.
At least one year experience in a mechanic's assistant or related role.
Ability to work well in a team-oriented environment.
Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
Willingness to learn and take direction from experienced mechanics.
Physical ability to lift heavy objects and perform manual tasks as required.
Ability to wear appropriate PPE.
Forklift and/or Skid Steer experience is considered an asset.
Skills in various trades, Heavy Equipment Technician or related certification, and Boiler Certification and/or experience are considered assets, but are not requirements of the position.
Required PPE and necessary tools are provided by the company. Additional training may be provided for the position, at the expense of the company and discretion of management.
The position requires at least 40 hours of work per week. Biomed operates between the hours of 8:00am and 4:30pm, Monday through Friday, but the
Mechanic's Assistant
may work a variation of this schedule alongside the
Mechanic
which may require overtime including early mornings, evenings, and possibly weekends. Company driver's meetings are held one Saturday every three months between the hours of 9:00am to 12:00pm, which the
Mechanic's Assistant
will be expected to attend.
The position is required to work primarily at Biomed's main operations (105 Industrial Drive, Aberdeen SK), but may be required to travel occasionally in order to perform maintenance and repair duties to vehicles on the road or located at our Regina Warehouse. Travel costs are at the expense of the company and overtime is paid at a rate of 1.5 times the regular hourly wage, in accordance with Saskatchewan labour regulations.
