Job Description

The City of Edmonton is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Mechanical Project Inspector to join our team!
As a Mechanical Project Inspector, you will play a crucial role in ensuring the successful execution of diverse construction projects, from design review to facility turnover. You will collaborate with project teams, including engineers, architects, and contractors, to mitigate risks and ensure projects adhere to City standards.
What will you do?

  • Thoroughly analyze technical documents at each design stage to ensure accessibility, reliability, and maintainability, flagging any concerns to the engineering team
  • Advocate for design elements that optimize future maintenance, such as equipment standardization, the use of quality materials, and easy access to spare parts
  • Contribute expertise and insights in design meetings, constructability reviews, and value engineering sessions
  • Ensure effective communication and information flow between project teams, trade groups, and relevant stakeholders
  • Ensure that input from all relevant trade specialties is gathered and incorporated into the design and construction process
  • Regularly visit construction sites to monitor progress, assess workmanship quality, and provide feedback to the project team
  • Stay informed about project activities, scheduling, changes, and potential issues by attending relevant meetings
  • Review shutdown permits, ensuring clear responsibility delineation, and coordinate shutdowns with Facility Maintenance Services personnel
  • Actively participate in the commissioning process, including witnessing testing and providing trade expertise
  • Collaborate effectively with design, delivery, architectural, and engineering groups to ensure project success and a smooth transition to operational status
  • Review shutdown permits on behalf of Facility Maintenance Services and ensure proper delineation of FMS responsibility
  • Coordinate IIS construction shutdowns with FMS forepersons and staff
  • Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications
  • Grade 12 supplemented by recognized certification at the journeyman level in an applicable mechanical trade
  • A minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in a mechanical trade supplemented with experience in contractor project supervision, site inspections, job estimating and construction costs, specification preparation and the interpretation and application of regulatory codes as they pertain to construction projects
  • Experience operating computer systems and utilizing office automation software
Assets:
  • Possession of a Red Seal Journeyman's Certification
  • Master certification
  • Safety Codes Officer designation
  • Building Automation System experience
  • A combination of construction and maintenance experience would be a valuable asset to this position
Skills required for success:
  • Strong technical writing and communication skills is essential
  • Confidence in a meeting environment with construction industry professionals is a must
  • Strong ability to interpret and analyze engineering drawings, reports, and testing data
  • Knowledge and understanding of construction processes and documentation is an asset
  • Solid understanding of, and experience in, all aspects of mechanical systems commissioning, maintenance, repair, refurbishment, and related activities
  • Broad knowledge of all mechanical trade practices
  • Comprehensive understanding and application of all related regulatory safety codes
  • Strong computer skills including proficiency in Windows, Microsoft Office, Google Suite and SAP
  • Understanding, and the ability to develop, testing protocols and procedures for trade related equipment and systems

Conditions of Employment:
  • Compliance with the City of Edmonton's safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as wearing steel toed boots, is a requirement for this position
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent)
  • Applicants may be required to arrange their own transportation for use on City business, and where appropriate will be reimbursed in accordance with City of Edmonton policy
