Job Description

Polar Racking Inc. is a North American leader in the design, engineering and manufacturing of PV mounting systems. We are at the forefront of PV innovation, leading the industry in cutting-edge design with a focus on continuous innovation, with a vision to deliver the highest value to our clients at the lowest cost per kWh. Our diversified portfolio of ground mount products for the commercial and utility scale markets, coupled with our unique suite of engineering collaboration tools, technical services, and installation support, allows us to deliver turnkey solutions that are modular, lighter, and quicker to install. We support our North American clients from multiple locations in North America.

We are seeking a motivated Mechanical or Mechatronics Engineering Co-op or intern student who is passionate about renewable energy, mechanical design, and real-world manufacturing. In this role, you will support the design, analysis, and development of components and assemblies for our solar PV mounting systems.

You will work closely with engineers, designers, and production teams to help create structurally sound, cost-effective, and manufacturable solutions.

Responsibilities:

Assist in the design and 3D modelling of solar PV mounting components and assemblies (SolidWorks preferred). Prepare 2D drawings, BOMs, and documentation for manufacturing. Perform basic structural calculations and preliminary engineering analysis (loading, material selection, stress considerations). Support FEA simulations, prototype builds, and product validation testing. Participate in design reviews, provide input on manufacturability and assembly improvements. Assist with product cost reduction, optimization, and component standardization. Collaborate with production, quality, and supply chain teams to ensure smooth transition from design to manufacturing. Conduct research on materials, fasteners, corrosion resistance, and industry-standard mounting methods. Support ongoing improvement of engineering processes and documentation (PDM/PLM, revisions, test records).

Qualifications:

Currently enrolled or graduated within the last one year in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, or a related program from a Canadian Accredited University. Strong proficiency with 3D CAD tools (SolidWorks preferred). Understanding of mechanical design fundamentals: forces, materials, fasteners, tolerances, structural behavior. Ability to interpret engineering drawings, GD&T, and assembly documentation. Experience with FEA tools, analytical calculations, or engineering simulation is an asset. Familiarity with manufacturing processes: sheet metal, machining, aluminum extrusion, welding, and assembly. Knowledge of solar PV systems or renewable-energy technology is an asset (not required). Strong communication, teamwork, and problem-solving abilities. Attention to detail and willingness to learn in a fast-paced engineering environment. Experience with robotics, design teams, or hands-on engineering clubs (Formula SAE, solar car, robotics, etc.). Basic understanding of electrical or mechatronic systems (actuators, sensors, low-voltage DC). Comfort with Excel/MATLAB/Python for calculations. * Interest in structural codes or standards (CSA, ASCE, Eurocode).
