Mechanical Estimator - Nordstrong Equipment
Winnipeg, Manitoba
Reporting to the Director of Estimating and Supply Chain, as a Mechanical Estimator, you will collaborate and coordinate with Sales, Engineering, Production, and Purchasing, as well as with external customers and suppliers to create accurate, competitive, and timely bids for key projects. This role plays an integral part in the growth of the company and is essential in supporting the estimating function for mining, agriculture, and industrial sectors.
As the Mechanical Estimator, you will:

  • Create Customer facing Quotations for custom bulk handling equipment (Bucket Elevators, Drag Conveyors, Screw Conveyors, and Belt Conveyors).
  • Review and comprehend technical and administrative documents to ensure the project scope is clearly understood by all stakeholders and priced accordingly.
  • Analyze documents, specifications, proposals, and addendums in preparation for pricing to generate project costs and lead times.
  • Perform pre-engineering evaluations to ensure equipment and its components are accurately specified to meet the technical and operational requirements of the customer's application.
  • Review specifications to ensure quotations meet all customer requirements and where necessary, call out exceptions.
  • Develop and maintain mutually beneficial business relationships with suppliers and customers.
  • Obtain pricing and lead times from suppliers / subcontractors and incorporate into estimate.
  • Accountable for accuracy and completeness of bid packages and any necessary revisions thereof.
  • Coordinate estimating activities by gathering proposals, drawings, specifications, researching past jobs for similar equipment, and related documents.
  • Ensure estimates include input from our Procurement Team related to raw material cost fluctuations and availability and from our Manufacturing Team regarding lead times and plant capacity.
  • Identify departmental process improvements through routine reporting and review of performance metrics. This includes working with other departments to streamline internal processes and identify opportunities to improve our customers' experience while increasing profitability.
  • Participate in post-mortems on select completed works to identify anomalies and investigate for accuracy.
  • The ability to translate customer specifications into an application design.
You and Your Experience:
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in estimating, specifically for mechanical equipment.
  • Graduate of a Mechanical, Industrial or Civil Engineering degree (Mechanical Technology diploma (or equivalent practical experience with demonstrated mechanical aptitude).
  • Proven background in estimating belt conveyors is an asset.
  • Industry experience in mining, industrial, or agriculture sectors is required.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings and technical specifications.
  • Previous experience in Design Engineering is considered a strong asset.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical equipment.
  • Proficient in manufacturing processes such as welding, machining, forming, and painting.
  • Advanced Excel skills are critical-confident using macros, pivot tables, and formulas.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, communication (verbal and written), and interpersonal skills.
  • Operates with a "must understand" mindset and is highly detail-oriented.
  • Team player with a strong sense of professionalism, integrity, and fiscal responsibility.
  • Entrepreneurial spirited, self-starter who thrives in a fast-paced, collaborative environment and is motivated to improve processes and customer service.
  • Leadership traits required; while formal people management experience is not necessary, the candidate must show initiative and the potential to lead.
  • Experience with Salesforce CRM and is an asset.
  • Bilingual French is a strong asset.
