Our Team:

The Vale Engineering & Studies Group has North Atlantic accountabilities to deliver engineering design and studies for the various Vale mines and plants in the North Atlantic region including Thompson.

The Opportunity

We are currently seeking a Mechanical Engineer to join our Engineering & Studies Group \xe2\x80\x93 North Atlantic based in Thompson, Manitoba. This is a permanent position.

As a member of the Central Engineering team, the Mechanical Engineer will provide technical expertise in the mechanical and piping disciplines to the Manitoba Operations. This will involve serving as a technical subject matter expert on engineering studies and sustaining capital projects through the planning, design and execution phases. The Mechanical Engineer will provide technical direction to external engineering consultants and construction contractors and will also provide technical guidance and mentoring to other members of the Central Engineering Team.

Additionally, in this position you will:

  • Provie technical direction for complex mechanical engineering designs and guide other design personnel.
  • Ensure adherence to scope, schedule, budget codes and standards.
  • Responsible for integrity of designs produced under his/her technical direction and approve and seal designs and drawings as per the professional Engineers Act.
  • Provide technical direction for complex engineer designs within area of expertise and assist and guide other design personnel.
  • Conduct complex engineering studies, field inspections, and prepare relevant reports.
  • Carry out field inspections, prepare field sketches and relevant reports.
  • Participate in the review of construction and commissioning and start-up functions.
  • Review and develop engineering standards.
  • Interact regularly with the plants and mines as a subject matter expert providing technical guidance.
  • Provide technical direction to external engineering consultants and review the quality of their engineering deliverables.
  • Apply mature engineering knowledge and exercises leadership, mentoring and training to other members of the team.
  • Effectively schedule, prioritize and manage tasks using MS Office Project tools to meet commitments with customers. Function as the team leader/member of single discipline and multi-discipline engineering projects. Coordinates activities, information, materials and resources within own area of responsibility.
About You

Education:
  • Engineering degree in Mechanical Engineering with a Professional Engineering designation preferred.
Experience:
  • A minimum of 5 years of Mechanical Design Engineering experience, preferably in a complex industrial setting
  • Experience in mechanical and piping disciplines is required.
Skills:
  • Demonstrated leadership skills.
  • Strong background in conducting process hazard reviews.
  • Proficient in the use of FRP Pipe
  • Experience in designing mechanical systems, including piping systems, HVAC, material Handling systems, dust control and machine design.
  • Familiarity with the latest codes, acts, regulations and up to date on technology and developments in the mechanical field.
  • Ability to work independently to achieve outcomes with minimum supervision.
  • Possess excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office suite of programs (Excel, Word, Power BI).
