Job Description

The Mechanical Engineer will be responsible for the design, analysis, and creation of documentation to support production of specialized nuclear fabrications, ensuring they meet strict safety, quality and regulatory and customer-imposed standards. These instruments are critical for monitoring and controlling reactor core conditions--neutron flux, temperature, and pressure--to ensure safe and efficient operation.

Key responsibilities for this role include performing Engineering analysis, developing manufacturing process plans, reviewing designs and shop capabilities and coordinating with departmental teams to ensure projects are completed on time and meet all requirements. The Mechanical Engineer will work closely with our Sales and Applications staff to support major nuclear utilities as well as emerging SMR (Small Modular Reactor) operators. This role requires strong knowledge of nuclear codes and standards as well as hands-on experience with project management, manufacturing and quality assurance within a highly regulated environment.

Core Duties/Responsibilities:



Contract Review:

Perform customer contract technical review including associated specifications and drawings, and identification of potential product or manufacturing risks. Participate in contract level status meetings and quote level design development meetings with customers as applicable. Prepare and submit contract level documentation, which may include general assembly drawings, specification compliance reports, instruction manuals and others as required.

Design and analysis:

Conduct research, perform calculations, and create technical designs for custom nuclear components, ensuring alignment with both customer requirements and internal manufacturing capabilities.

Manufacturing Support:

Develop detailed plans for manufacturing, including weld and braze design, bills of material and drawing packages.

Project Management:

Plan and manage project scopes, including design proposals, progress reports, prototype manufacturing, environmental qualification, data package review and submission.

Engineering Collaboration:

Work closely with manufacturing and quality teams to ensure proposed designs are feasible, cost-effective, and compliant with nuclear safety and regulatory standards.

Problem Solving:

Investigate mechanical failures, troubleshoot production issues, assist manufacturing team in development of tooling, equipment and process improvements and provide technical support to departments as required.

Other Functions and Responsibilities:



Prepare special reports, articles, patent disclosures, and perform related duties as required.

Skill/Knowledge & Other Requirements:



EDUCATIONAL

Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or Applied Science Mechanical Engineering Technologist Diploma Licensed Professional Engineer (P.Eng) from Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO)
EXPERIENCE

Minimum 5+ years engineering experience in the nuclear or similar industry Prior exposure to nuclear instrumentation strongly preferred. Experience in a custom fabrication or manufacturing environment necessary
PHYSICAL

Regularly required to sit, stand, walk 2-4 hours at a time Required ability to use hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard, mouse, and telephone Frequently required to sit and reach with hands and arms Verbal and listening skills required Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds Work will be performed in office and various production site work environments
OTHER REQUIREMENTS

Knowledge of reactor instrumentation systems Ability to interpret contract documentation, specifications and drawings Familiarity with ASME, IEEE, and 10CFR-related design standards. Proficiency in 3D CAD (SolidWorks/AutoCAD), Microsoft Office, and engineering documentation Excellent communication and presentation skills for interfacing with team Strong analytical and problem-solving skills Ability to manage multiple concurrent design activities under tight timelines.

Pay: $95,000.00-$105,000.00 per year
