Job Summary
We are seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer specializing in Building Automation Systems (BAS) to join our engineering leadership team. This role is responsible for BAS and HVAC controls design, development of Sequences of Operation, estimating, and technical project management for commercial, institutional, and retrofit projects.
The ideal candidate will act as a technical lead, providing engineering direction from concept through commissioning, supporting project teams, and coordinating closely with mechanical consultants, contractors, and owners. This position requires deep knowledge of HVAC systems, control strategies, and BAS integration platforms.
Key ResponsibilitiesBAS & HVAC Controls Design
Lead the design of Building Automation Systems and HVAC control strategies
Develop and review detailed Sequences of Operation for systems including:
RTUs, AHUs, DOAS, heat pumps, boilers, chillers
VAV, FPB, unit heaters, exhaust and supply fans
Prepare and review control schematics, system architecture diagrams, and points lists
Select and size control devices including valves, sensors, actuators, and dampers
Ensure compliance with project specifications, codes, and industry standards (ASHRAE, Ontario Building Code)
Technical Leadership & Coordination
Serve as the senior technical authority for BAS-related engineering decisions
Review mechanical and electrical drawings for controls integration and constructability
Coordinate with consulting engineers, mechanical contractors, electrical contractors, and vendors
Provide engineering support to field teams during installation, testing, and commissioning
Review and approve submittals, shop drawings, and as-built documentation
Estimating & Proposals
Lead BAS cost estimating, material take-offs, and pricing strategies
Support proposal development, scope definition, and tender clarifications
Participate in value engineering and scope optimization exercises
Project Management & Execution
Oversee BAS projects from design through closeout
Support project scheduling, budgeting, change management, and risk mitigation
Participate in site meetings and commissioning activities as required
Ensure projects are delivered on time, within budget, and to performance expectations
Qualifications & Requirements
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering
5+ years of experience in Building Automation Systems and HVAC controls
Strong technical knowledge of:
HVAC systems and advanced control strategies
BAS architectures and system integration
Hands-on experience with BAS platforms, such as:
Niagara AX / Niagara 4
Johnson Controls, Trane, KMC, or similar systems
Proven experience developing Sequences of Operation and control narratives
Ability to read and interpret mechanical, electrical, and controls drawings
Strong leadership, mentoring, and communication skills
Valid driver's license (site visits required)
Preferred Assets
Experience with BAS upgrades, retrofits, and integrations
Commissioning and functional performance testing experience
Project management or senior project coordination background
Experience working directly with owners and consulting engineers
