As a result, the group also oversees renewable energy and energy storage projects. Furthermore, as critical infrastructure protection becomes a growing concern for utilities, the group also continues to support the growth of SNC-Lavalin\'s digital and telecommunications technologies.

We are looking for a Mechanical EIT will work on a variety of hydro projects with a focus on heavy mechanical (gates and cranes) and turbine-generator related work.

Our projects include large and small hydro projects and dam-safety related mandates (spillway gates and hoist machinery) for clients/utilities throughout Canada and the US, as well as some international projects. The successful candidate will work in the Mechanical team to perform inspections, prepare design calculations, write procurement specifications, work with vendors for equipment supply contracts, and liaise with clients. The successful candidate will mentor and provide technical guidance for junior engineers in our team.

Key Responsibilities:

To perform this role successfully, the Mechanical Engineer (Engineer-in-Training) will be responsible for, but not limited to, the following:

  • Work with SNC Lavalin\xe2\x80\x99s Hydro Group to provide detailed engineering and calculations focusing on Balance of Plant systems and/or Heavy Mechanical (i.e., stoplogs, hydraulic gates, valves, and hoists, cranes, etc.) equipment.
  • Calculation of airflow system pressure, flow, and power requirements as well as fresh air, cooling, and heating loads.
  • Calculation of pressure piping systems, flow, and power requirements as well as material handling system loading and power requirements.
  • Sizing and selecting equipment for ventilation systems, pressure piping systems.
  • Sizing and selecting equipment components for heavy mechanical.
  • Preparation of general arrangement drawings, detail installation drawings, piping isometrics, bills of materials, line lists, technical specifications, and equipment lists.
  • In this role you will at times be responsible for conceptual design and providing guidance to designers and draftspersons.
  • The preferred candidate will have demonstrated experience working within multi-disciplinary design teams.
  • Coordination and working with construction and commissioning teams on work sites.
  • Travel to job sites will be required on a as needed basis.
Key Qualifications:
  • You have an under-graduate degree in Mechanical Engineering preferably with 2 to 4 years of experience in hydropower field and are available for full-time work.
  • Previous work experience in summer or Co-Op work terms in a role working with standard engineering methods, technologies and computerized design techniques is an asset.
  • You are registered or are eligible for registration as an Engineer in Training in the province of British Columbia, with an undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Demonstrated experience and expertise in at least one of the following areas is an asset but not a requirement: Co-op works terms working in the Hydro Power industry, tanks and pressure vessels, piping systems; HVAC systems, pumping systems.
