Math Program Supervisor (part Time)

Job Description

This is a part-time position that will begin approximately September 4, 2025 (specific date to be determined), with some paid training prior to that at mutually arranged dates. Interviews will begin in July, 2025, as applications are received, and will continue until the position is filled.

This is a unique opportunity to work with a non-profit program that provides after-school mathematics classes for primary school-aged children. Mathematics professors founded Archimedes Math Schools in 2012 and run the program as volunteers. We will be running in-person classes for Grades 4, 5 and 6 in the 2025-2026 school year. We expect to run six classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays, with six teachers for approximately 80-90 students. The supervisor will supervise the Tuesday/Thursday classes on site at 600 Cambridge Street. Classes run most weeks between September 9, 2025 and April 28, 2026. (We do not run classes during the week of September 30, the week of October 13, Christmas break, or school spring break.)

This role is appropriate for a qualified applicant looking for part-time work with a non-profit. For example, this position might be well suited to a retired teacher or a university student.

Qualifications



The successful applicant will assume a supervisory role and must:

Have completed some university-level math courses with excellent grades. Applicants with a BSc in Mathematics or a related mathematical science discipline may be prioritized. Be hard working, well organized, reliable, enthusiastic, and enjoy working with children. Share our passion for improving math education through the use of conventional instruction and a low-cost after-school option for families. Have teaching or tutoring experience. Be passionate about math. Be comfortable working with computers and google sheets and Excel. Have excellent written and oral communication skills and interpersonal skills. Be available during the period September 4, 2025 - April 28, 2026. Be available to supervise classes Tuesdays and Thursdays, 4:15 - 6:15 at St. Mark's Lutheran Church, 600 Cambridge Street.
Hours for this position will vary from week to week with most weeks requiring an average of 5 - 12 hours per week, with approximately 4 - 6 hours per week on site. (During busy weeks more hours will be required and during less busy weeks fewer hours may be required.) The supervisor will be paid by the hour, with hourly rate to be determined based on qualifications.

Responsibilities



The supervisor's responsibilities will include:

Administrative responsibilities related to running the program. Supervising and mentoring teaching staff, who will be university students. Organizing lessons and providing lessons to teaching staff electronically in advance of lessons (most lessons are already prepared). Preparing some lessons and worksheets with solutions as required as well as preparing new tests. Managing excel sheets, which track student achievement. Coordinating and attending the Math League contest for each grade. Assisting teachers with writing progress reports twice per year. Arranging for photocopying to be done each week. Substituting for teaching staff when necessary. Helping children with math on-site, greeting parents and ensuring children are safely picked up from the program. Managing Dropbox folders for parents and teachers. Communicating with parents and serving as a liaison with landlords. Various other reasonable duties assigned by the program directors.
