Founded in 2021, Bioform has developed a proprietary method to manufacture plastic alternatives based on wood pulp reinforced hydrogels at high speeds by modifying existing pulp and paper making machinery. The manufacturing process has a low carbon footprint and can produce highly versatile materials to replace a wide range of single use plastics. Bioform has developed both compostable and paper-recyclable films that can be heat sealed or thermoformed depending on the application. The Role:
Bioform is looking for an 8 month Materials R&D Engineer Intern starting from September 2025 - April 2026, to work on the scale-up of our plastic alternative films.
The role will include the commissioning, troubleshooting, and operation of our new continuous film production unit and a new thermoforming station. In addition, the Mechanical R&D Engineer Intern will assist in the wet-lab preparation of film materials for the production unit, and the mechanical and barrier testing of the produced films. Under supervision from two project leads, you will plan and execute activities, write up project reports and present development findings to the wider team.
We are looking for a self-motivated, proactive individual with hands-on experience with lab work and operation of experimental equipment who will thrive in a fast-paced environment and who wants to see the real impact of their work.
Primary Responsibilities:
Ensure lab cleanliness and well stocked resources.
Troubleshoot and assist with the commissioning of continuous film production unit and new thermoforming station.
Synthesis of materials and films based on wood pulp fibers and hydrogel.
Operation of characterization lab equipment (tensile testers, hydraulic compression testers, etc.).
Assist with set-up of new operations facility.
Process and organize collected data, write reports to summarize developments made.
Participate in group meetings and discussions to share findings.
Qualifications:
Pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Materials Engineering or Chemistry
Hands on experience troubleshooting equipment is an asset.
Experience using LABVIEW is an asset.
Hands on experience in a wet laboratory preferred.
Experience with Mechanical Assembly is considered an asset
Must have good verbal and written communication skills.
