Job Description

The Assessment and Failure Investigation department offers engineering solutions through root cause failure analysis, condition assessment, welding engineering, coatings and corrosion consulting, and fitness-for-service analysis. We also provide standard and non-standard environment testing including thermal cycling, salt fog corrosion, UV condensation, pressurized hydrogen tensile testing, fatigue testing, and evaluation of self-lubricating bushings. A variety of value-added projects for electric utilities, transportation industries, fabrication shops and certification agencies are also carried out by the Applied Materials department.



Duties

Under the direction of the Team Lead, Assessment and Failure Investigation, the successful candidate will work with Senior Engineers, Scientist and Technologists on projects focused on corrosion management and protective coatings systems, but may also support projects involving condition assessment, failure investigation and general materials consulting. You will be expected to prepare budgets and proposals, schedule tests and inspections, collect and analyze test data, prepare technical and test reports, prepare and/or review coating specifications and test plans, conduct coating system failure analysis, and provide consulting on corrosion mitigation practices, novel protective coatings systems and application techniques.



The work will involve projects around coatings and corrosion and general materials engineering focus (such as failure investigation, materials characterization and selection or mechanical property testing).



Manage projects (scope, schedule, and budgets) of low complexity or support projects of moderate complexity with supervision. Participate in design of project methodology and prepare quotations and technical or test reports; Plan, schedule, and execute testing and inspections, both in-house and in the field, considering availability of inspectors, equipment, and customer needs; Coordinate and assist technologists involved in field and lab testing and inspections; Develop processes to improve the efficiency of operations; Work with multiple contractors and clients at any given time; Maintain professional relationships with other departments, outside consultants, contractors and suppliers to gather and relay information and resolve issues of concern.


What you bring

Materials, metallurgical, or chemical engineering or equivalent degree recognized by universities in Canada required.


Minimum 5 years related work experience in materials engineering and/or corrosion and protective coatings inspection and specification.


Registration or ability to immediately register as a professional engineer with the Engineers and Geoscientists of BC (i.e., non-British Columbia registrations are acceptable if there is an ability to immediately transfer the accreditation).


Experience in materials testing, failure analysis, welding, and/or non-destructive testing would be an asset.


The ideal candidate will have expertise in paint coatings or have worked as a Coatings Engineer in one or more of the following practice areas: Coating consulting and Engineering Coating Manufacturing and R&D Industrial Coating Applicators Industrial Asset Management and Maintenance Marine and Shipbuilding Non-destructive Testing and Consulting


Demonstrated experience and understanding of surface finishes, preparation requirements, application techniques and technologies, curing process, testing requirements, and pass/fail criteria in addition to knowledge of coating system varieties, compositions, properties, etc.


Familiarity with internationally recognized testing, inspection, and design standards related to coatings (NACE, ISO, ASTM, etc.)
