Welcome to SGS Canada! Our Edmonton materials laboratory is looking for a Materials Engineer with a passion for failure analysis to join our team. The ideal candidate will also have experience with fracture mechanics and/or fatigue testing. This position is full time/permanent including Canada Life Benefits (health, dental, vision) from day one. RSP eligibility, Employee Assistance Plans and so much more. The schedule is regular Monday to Friday hours.

Specific Responsibilities include:

  • Principal responsibility involves conducting failure and root cause analysis of mechanical and pressure equipment and providing advice to the client to mitigate further occurrence of the same. Specific fields of effort may include but are not limited to:
  • fracture mechanics analysis
  • fatigue assessment
  • fracture mapping/interpretation
  • experimental stress analysis
  • closed form and finite element stress analysis
  • microstructural and fractographic interpretation
  • materials categorization/identification
  • material selection
  • corrosion science
  • Interpret regulatory and statutory requirements, codes and customer specifications relating to fabrication, welding and materials and provide consulting services of the same.
  • Determine client requirements, prescribe and if necessary, develop testing methods to evaluate materials relative to statutory requirements, construction standards and/or good engineering practice.
  • Prepare and review in-house work orders that communicate testing requirements to other departments and maintain traceability of samples and associated documentation.
  • Interpret laboratory test report results and provide metallurgical evaluations of the same on request.
  • Ensure proper adhesion to testing protocols have been followed with respect to statutory health and safety requirements on delegated assignments.
  • Provide supervision and mentoring to junior engineering and technical staff.
  • Keep a clean working environment.
  • Work in compliance with safety regulations.
  • Participate in quality improvement and cost reduction efforts.
  • In any work capacity, conduct oneself in an ethical and professional manner in accordance to the standards laid out by provincial professional association.
Qualifications

Profile:
  • Education: The individual must possess a minimum of a bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s degree in materials or metallurgical engineering from a recognized University (or equivalency to Canadian University) This is regarded as a fully qualified professional engineering position and the individual must be registered as a licensed P.Eng. with APEGA.
  • Experience: This position requires a minimum of five years of relevant engineering experience
Required Skills:

-The following subject matter knowledge and technical skills are considered an asset:
  • failure analysis
  • fracture mechanics
  • fatigue testing/analysis
  • finite element analysis
  • nondestructive testing
  • specialized fields of corrosion
  • steelmaking
  • experience in welding/fabrication shops, foundries, forge shops or other metal manufacturing
  • instrumentation and control
  • mechanical aptitude supported by background and experience
-The engineer must have very good verbal and written communication.

-Welding experience/knowledge would be an asset

-Candidates must be proficient in using various types of computer software (Word, Excel. PowerPoint & Outlook).

-Proven ability to manage and coordinate multiple projects in a fast-paced, highly professional environment.

-Ability to work well with others & independently.

-Proven time management skills and a strong attention to detail.

-Works well under pressure.

-Travel to other SGS locations or client locations may be required from time to time.
