The Marketing & Communications Associate supports NAT's internal and external communications, marketing campaigns, and brand presence across digital and print platforms. This role involves content creation, public relations support, marketing coordination, and stakeholder engagement. Working closely with the MarCom team, the Marketing & Communications Associate will play a key role in strengthening NAT's communications infrastructure, marketing reach, storytelling capacity, and external visibility.
Key Responsibilities
Content Creation & Distribution
Draft and edit written content including newsletters, blog posts, press releases, event summaries, and promotional materials.
Maintain consistency in voice and messaging across all public-facing communications.
Prepare written materials for community updates, public announcements, and stakeholder outreach.
Support documentation of communication and marketing procedures for internal use.
Marketing Coordination
Assist in planning and executing marketing campaigns for events, programs, and initiatives.
Create social media content, manage posting schedules, and monitor engagement.
Develop basic visual assets in Canva or other design tools.
Coordinate with external vendors, printers, and designers as needed.
Track campaign metrics and prepare summary reports.
Public Relations & External Communications
Assist with writing and editing press releases, media kits, and outreach messages for local media and partners.
Support efforts to build and maintain relationships with media outlets, community organizations, and institutional partners.
Monitor and track media mentions and community sentiment related to NAT's initiatives.
Draft communication briefs for leadership to use in interviews, presentations, and outreach.
Strategic Communications & Process Development
Contribute to the development and refinement of internal marketing and communications workflows.
Document procedures related to campaign planning, external outreach, and content review.
Assist in identifying areas for improvement in communications and marketing practices.
Help build a knowledge base of marketing and communications assets, templates, and processes.
Stakeholder & Community Relations
Coordinate communications with partners, sponsors, and external collaborators.
Draft updates and touchpoints for Problem Providers, speakers, judges, and volunteers during major programs.
Support outreach to academic and industry audiences to raise awareness of NAT's work and events.
Skills & Competencies
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Clear, concise writing style suitable for public, technical, and promotional audiences.
Ability to synthesize complex information into accessible, engaging language.
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
Ability to work both independently and collaboratively across teams and respond well to feedback.

Qualifications
Required
Proven experience writing for public or professional audiences across multiple formats.
Ability to meet deadlines, follow brand guidelines, and collaborate effectively with a team.
Preferred
Experience in nonprofit or educational environments.
Familiarity with public relations, media outreach, and social media management.
Prior involvement in marketing campaigns and/or event promotion.
Working Conditions
This is a hybrid position based in Edmonton, Alberta, requiring in-person work 1-2 days per week and full on-site presence during key program dates. Some evening or weekend work may be required during live events.
Eligibility Criteria (Subject to BioTalent Canada Student Work Placement Program)
Student must be enrolled full- or part-time at a Canadian post-secondary institution.
Student must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or granted refugee protection, and legally permitted to work in Canada.
