Position Overview

The School of Architecture, Planning & Landscape invites applications for a Marketing and Communication Specialist. This Recurring Part-time position is for approximately 6 months/year, with the possibility of extension.

Reporting directly to the Manager, Marketing and Communications within the Dean\'s Office. The Marketing and Communication Specialist will drive select initiatives originating from the Manager, Marketing and Communications. This may include supporting a range of campaigns, publications, special events, or other communication tactics that address the goals and objectives of the faculty\'s integrated marketing strategy. The candidate works collaboratively with leadership, faculty, staff, students, and select vendors to publish materials for print, email, social and web channels. The work includes writing/reviewing web, ad, email and social media copy, publishing web content and tracking results.

The Marketing and Communication Specialist supports marketing and communication plans,campaigns and programs that engage the School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape\'s key audiences, boost the awareness of the faculty, enhance its overall reputation, and deliver against the University of Calgary\'s and faculty\'s core strategic directions, as well as against specific goals,objectives and revenue targets.

Working in a highly collaborative role, this individual is a savvy communicator and knowledgeable of the creative production processes required to support complex marketing programs and campaigns.They are a strong and diplomatic communicator who strives to understand the university environment,has an ability to view projects through the unique perspectives of a diverse array of client-colleagues,and possesses the sound judgment required to get to a successful outcome in what can often be challenging circumstances. The person in this role must be a steadfast advocate for the university and faculty\'s brand and core creative platform, applying core principles to decisions made in the context of multiple projects.

To manage the multiple projects that this role handles, this individual must be excellent at organizationand prioritization, as well as managing information effectively for different types of projects. While no shiftwork or dangerous conditions are involved, there is stress associated with managing multiple and often time-sensitive deadlines for mission-critical deliverables, as well as dealing with clients atvarious levels and from different areas within the faculty.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

Marketing/Communications

  • Implement effective strategies and plans in support of the faculty marketing strategy.
  • Support a range of campaigns and special events, produce a large variety of publications, and employ other communication tactics that address the goals and objectives of the faculty\'s integrated marketing strategy.
  • Work to ensure alignment of marketing across the SAPL Marketing and Communications portfolio.
  • Ensure implementation of strong and consistent brand and positioning protocols across all program areas.
  • Adhere to and perpetuate the university\'s and faculty\'s brand and identity guidelines in the interest of protecting the professional reputation and the distinct positioning of the faculty.
  • Identify gaps in tool sets or guidance required to support campus marketing needs effectively and champion solutions.
Stakeholder Relations
  • Develop and maintain productive relationships with faculty leadership and colleagues within the university, staff, vendors and consumers of SAPL marketing offerings.
  • Coordinate with outside agencies and vendors as required.
  • Handle complex issues and challenging interpersonal interactions with composure and diplomacy.
  • Ensure that communications are timely, accurate, informative, professional, and represent the faculty appropriately.
  • Seek expert opinions and advice where appropriate and considered reliable.
  • Monitor incoming messages on the Design Matters email inbox.
Project Support
  • Help develop and finalize briefs for assigned projects, ensuring completion and validation before project launch.
  • Liaise with faculty-colleagues to implement assigned and report on progress.
  • Secure approval of all collateral content and artwork prior to production, ensuring both alignment with the end users expectations, as well as with university and faculty positioning.
  • Assist with content review/validation/refinement, and participate in proofing and proof-reading processes.
  • Ensure accurate production specifications are available for consistent and timely quoting, production and delivery of materials.
  • Interface with external vendors and suppliers as required to ensure project completion.
  • Schedule and handle logistics for meetings as needed.
  • Provide input as needed for changes to procedures and practices.
  • Deal effectively with complex issues, using judgment, common sense and problem-solving skills.
Qualifications / Requirements:
  • 1-2 years of experience in a specialist or coordination position within the marketing or communications sector.
  • Undergraduate degree, diploma or recognized credential in marketing, communication, journalism, or related field; a combination of education and experience will be considered.
  • Experience working in an institutional environment with high-profile stakeholders is an asset.
  • Demonstrated experience implementing marketing/communication strategies to meet project goals and objectives.
  • Proven exposure to, and experience with, the creative process and associated project management challenges.
  • Well organized, with a demonstrated ability to prioritize functions on a daily basis and capable of simultaneously managing multiple responsibilities efficiently and effectively.
  • Demonstrated ability to work well independently as well as in an energetic team environment.
  • Results-oriented, with a demonstrated initiative in turning ideas into formalized projects.
  • Confident and poised with strong interpersonal skills, passionate about quality and able to deliver in a high-performance environment, with multiple projects, stakeholders and deadlines.
  • Strong working knowledge of MS Office applications.
  • Knowledge of website management, email campaigns and social media trends, and a combination of creativity and analytical skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
