Canpac Marine Services Inc., is based in the Port of Vancouver, Canada and has been providing marine services to inland, coastal, and offshore sectors since 1965. Canpac operates a fleet of specialized vessels ranging from 150t to 3000t conducting material delivery and subsea inspection, repair, maintenance and construction of marine assets from surface to 6,000 meters of water depth.
Job Summary:
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Marine Surveyor with specialized expertise in the operation, processing, and interpretation of underwater multibeam sonar data and underwater tracking using Ultra-Short Baseline (USBL) acoustic positioning systems. The ideal candidate will be responsible for planning, executing, and reporting on hydrographic surveys, inspections, and other underwater mapping projects. This role requires a strong understanding of hydrographic principles, data processing techniques, and the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Responsibilities:
Survey Planning and Execution:
Plan and execute hydrographic surveys using multibeam sonar and USBL tracking systems.
Determine appropriate survey methodologies and equipment configurations based on project requirements.
Conduct pre-survey planning, including mobilization, calibration, and testing of equipment.
Ensure compliance with all applicable industry standards and regulations (e.g., IHO standards).
Data Acquisition:
Operate and maintain multibeam sonar systems and USBL tracking systems.
Collect high-quality bathymetric and acoustic data.
Monitor data quality in real-time and make adjustments as needed.
Ensure accurate positioning and orientation of survey equipment.
Data Processing and Analysis:
Process and analyze multibeam sonar data to create accurate bathymetric models and charts.
Process and analyze USBL data to determine the position of underwater objects.
Perform data cleaning, filtering, and correction.
Generate survey reports, maps, and other deliverables.
Interpret survey data and identify potential hazards or anomalies.
Equipment Maintenance and Calibration:
Maintain and calibrate multibeam sonar systems, USBL tracking systems, and other survey equipment.
Troubleshoot equipment malfunctions and perform minor repairs.
Keep accurate records of equipment maintenance and calibration.
Reporting and Documentation:
Prepare comprehensive survey reports, including methodology, results, and conclusions.
Create high-quality maps, charts, and other visual representations of survey data.
Maintain accurate project records and documentation.
Client Communication:
Communicate effectively with clients to understand their needs and provide updates on project progress.
Present survey findings to clients in a clear and concise manner.
Address client questions and concerns.
Safety:
Adhere to all safety regulations and procedures.
Participate in safety briefings and training exercises.
Identify and mitigate potential safety hazards.
Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Geomatics Engineering, Surveying, Oceanography, or a related field.
5 years of experience as a marine surveyor with specific experience in multibeam sonar and USBL tracking.
Proven experience operating and processing data from various multibeam sonar systems (e.g. Teledyne, Kongsberg).
Proven experience operating and processing data from various USBL tracking systems
Strong understanding of hydrographic surveying principles and techniques.
Proficiency in hydrographic data processing software (e.g.Hypack).
Familiarity with industry standards and regulations
Experience with GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS).
Excellent data analysis and problem-solving skills.
Strong communication, interpersonal, and teamwork skills.
Ability to work independently and manage projects effectively.
Valid driver's license.
Certified Hydrographic Surveyor (CHTS) - an asset]
Experience with remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) or autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) - an asset
Compensation and Benefits:
$45-$65/hour
