Job Description

Metlakatla Stewardship Society (MSS) has an immediate opening for a full-time Marine Shipping Coordinator in Metlakatla, British Columbia. Under the direct supervision of the MSS Executive Director, the Marine Shipping Coordinator will be responsible for overseeing the implementation of the Reconciliation Framework Agreement for Bioregional Oceans Management and Protection (RFA) and shipping-related projects.





The Candidate



Support the implementation of Metlakatla's Marine Use Plan in coordination with other Metlakatla Stewardship Society departments. Lead the technical development of specific plans and products associated with Metlakatla's involvement in Oceans Protection Plan initiatives, including Cumulative Effects of Marine Shipping; Proactive vessel management; Emergency Tow Vessel management; and other marine shipping-related initiatives. Represent Metlakatla's marine shipping interests in regional technical forums for the Oceans Protection Plan. Represent Metlakatla's interests while working with other First Nations and the provincial government through the marine shipping-related initiatives. Liaise with all levels of government, other First Nations and the Port of Prince Rupert to advance Metlakatla's marine planning interests. Work with MSS, the Metlakatla Treaty office, Development Corporation and Governing Council colleagues to coordinate and synchronize Marine Shipping initiatives with other ongoing Metlakatla programs and initiatives. Manage existing funding agreements and budgets and seek additional funding to support Metlakatla's marine shipping initiatives. Perform all other tasks within the scope of the position and as assigned.

Education, Experience, Skills and Abilities



Bachelor's degree in Natural Resource Management, Marine Planning or related field with preference for a graduate degree. At least five years of work experience in a related field. Experience working for or with an Indigenous community or organization. Experience managing budgets. Confident in using various software programs, including Microsoft Office applications. A valid driver's license and access to a reliable car. An acceptable Criminal Record Check. Strong interpersonal communication skills with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with community members, colleagues, and government officials. Knowledge of the history and current context of marine shipping on the North Coast of British Columbia. Demonstrated interest in marine management laws, policies and systems, including those governing shipping, recreation, Food, Social and Ceremonial (FSC) practices, ecosystem conservation, and other aspects of a dynamic marine ecosystem. Knowledge of Metlakatla territory, rights and title interests, culture and practices, and a demonstrated ability to work successfully with First Nation communities. Hard working with the ability to prioritize and deliver multiple projects within tight time constraints. * Familiarity with working and managing traditional use and culturally sensitive data.
