Position Summary





The Marine Operator / SVOP is a hands-on role responsible for operating workboats, tugs and vessels under 5GRT. Working under the direction of the Foreman or Lead Hand, this role contributes to day-to-day site operations, equipment readiness, and the deliver of high-quality work product.


This position is based out of 650 Gordon Street Whitby, Ontario at our Whitby Harbour Sediment Remediation project.


Key Responsibilities




Site Support and Daily Operations



o Operates workboats to manoeuvre barges to support dredging operations

Ensures the vessel is operated in a safe manner in accordance with all Transport Canada and CSA regulations and requirements. Complete pre-departure checks and inspections at regular intervals.

o Works as part of a crew under the leadership of the Foreman or Lead Hand, following direction to complete assigned tasks safely and efficiently.

Supports site logistics, including loading and unloading equipment, supplies, and construction materials as required. Assists with docking, rigging, and marine equipment handling. Participates in crew discussions to understand daily work plans and asks clarifying questions when needed. Contributes to maintaining a respectful, productive, and team-oriented work environment.



Safety and Compliance



Promotes and practices a strong safety culture by adhering to the Occupational Health and Safety Act, company policies, and COR protocols. Uses required PPE and ensures safe work habits at all times. Reports hazards, incidents, and near-misses promptly and participates in safety meetings and training. Limits mobile phone use during work hours to job-related purposes only.



Work Quality and Productivity



Executes work according to specifications and instructions provided by the Foreman or Lead Hand. Performs minor maintenance and daily care of equipment, including greasing and cleaning. Ensures tools and equipment are returned in good working condition or reports maintenance needs promptly. Supports environmentally responsible work practices across all tasks. Completes daily time tracking accurately and on schedule.

Additional Duties



Assists with basic equipment servicing and maintenance routines. Performs other marine duties as assigned. Submits credit card receipts with proper descriptions if authorized to use a company card. Demonstrates willingness to learn new skills and progress toward more advanced responsibilities.

Qualifications



Small Vessel Operator Proficiency (SVOP) Training Certificate required Experience operating small boats or tugs (SVOP) required Master Limited (60GT) considered an asset Marine Emergency Duties (MED) A3 required
Marine or barging experience a significant asset Completion of secondary school preferred. Valid Class G driver's license with a clean record required Comfortable with physically demanding work, including lifting up to 50 lbs and repetitive motion. Welding and/or heavy equipment operating experience an asset Ability to use a cell phone with data for time tracking and communications.

Working Conditions



Outdoor work Willing and able to work 12+ hour days Regular exposure to changing weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, wind, and ice. Physical demands including lifting up to 50 lbs bending, climbing, and repetitive movements. Exposure to diesel fumes, loud equipment, and water hazards.



This is a temporary full-time role working until March 2026, with the possibility of extension.
