Position Summary

The Registered Counsellor works within the context of a client centered care model, in accordance with the standards of professional practice and consistent with the mission, vision and values and established policy and protocols of RainCity Housing. Carrying individual caseloads with up to 12 Participants not withstanding a shared model of collaboration, the Registered Counsellor works within a trans-disciplinary team and as part of a broader integrated system to deliver services to participants experiencing various levels of substance use and mental health conditions. Using a person-centered and trauma-informed approach, the Counsellor provides independent substance use and mental health screening, identifies the participant's motivation and their stage in the treatment process, and encourages engagement in treatment.

The Registered Counsellor is actively engaged in community outreach, home support, case management, and service coordination for participants, maintaining oversight to ensure that participant's self-identified goals for recovery and community integration are supported by appropriate services and practices, consistent with the values of self-determination/choice and harm reduction. Counselling and support services are often provided in non-traditional environments, such as the participant's home, coffee shops, and community centres.

$42.27- $52.81 (Grid 12 HSPA)

Hours:

67.5 bi-weekly

Schedule:

This position requires the successful candidate to work a 4-week block rotation with a shift partner. Shift times are 8:30am - 4:30pm and 12:30pm - 8:30pm. Rotation includes one weekend a month, 8:30am - 4:30pm. Includes a 30-minute unpaid meal break.

A valid B.C. Driver's License, an acceptable drivers abstract, and use of a reliable personal vehicle is required. Working knowledge of the Fraser Health region is required. A clear British Columbia Vulnerable Sector Criminal Record Check for working with vulnerable adults and/or children is a condition of employment with RainCity Housing. Applicants must be willing and able to receive a clearance under the Criminal Record Review Act.

Program Summary

Maple Ridge Intensive Case Management (ICM) plays a vital role in the continuum of services and supports for people with serious mental illness and substance use issues in BC. The ICM Team assists clients by helping them to identify and achieve personalized recovery goals and by assisting in the coordination of support services (e.g. mental health, criminal justice, family, and addictions services). The ICM team also provides housing opportunities for clients using a 'housing first' scattered site approach. Clients are offered immediate access to rent supplements, so they have the opportunity to live in the same kinds of permanent independent apartments that are typically available to people without mental illness, and the rent supplements are provided without requiring participation in psychiatric or substance use treatment. Self-determination and choice are at the centre of all considerations with respect to the provision of housing and support services.

List of Duties

Provides independent substance use and mental health screening, and comprehensive assessments using DSM criteria. Provides appropriate treatment and support to service participants, including therapy. Identifies the participant's motivation and their stage in the treatment process. Establishes and maintains non-judgmental therapeutic relationships with participants. Collaborates and consults with colleagues and other community resources and assists with developing and providing education services as required. Supports participants through evictions and moves, ensuring that learnings and skills from each housing situation are not lost.

QUALIFICATIONS

Many forms of education and experience are valued, including volunteering and lived experience of mental health/substance use/homelessness; Minimum education and experience include:



Master's degree in an Allied Health Discipline from a recognized program and registration with a professional body (e.g., Registered Social Worker, Registered Clinical Counsellor, Canadian Certified Counsellor) Three (3) years' recent related experience providing professional services to individuals who have substance abuse and mental health illness, including two (2) years post graduate experience, with urban homeless populations with serious mental illness, substance addiction and complex health conditions. Experience with cognitive behavioural, narrative, strength based, and relapse prevention practices preferred. Current first aid and CPR Valid B.C. Driver's License and acceptable drivers abstract. Use of a personal vehicle is required.

Skills to contribute to safety in the workplace, including: Demonstrated anti-racism knowledge and skills to support racialized communities, including knowledge of Canada's historical and ongoing colonialism and its impact on Indigenous peoples. Demonstrated anti-discrimination knowledge and skills to support equity-seeking groups, including the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, people who use drugs and alcohol, people living with mental health conditions, and sex workers. Demonstrated understanding of oppression and marginalization, specifically as related to people with experiences of a mental illness, addiction, or homelessness. Comprehensive knowledge of psychotherapeutic and counselling skills, including motivational interviewing, cognitive behavioural, narrative, and collaborative therapy. Broad knowledge of bio-psycho-social issues that may occur in response to changing mental health and alcohol and/or other drug needs. Broad knowledge of mental health and substance use diagnoses and their interactions. Broad knowledge of DSM diagnostic classification system. Broad knowledge of psychopharmacology. Knowledge of the principles of recovery, and recovery models and practice in mental illness and problematic substance use. Knowledge of harm reduction principles and activities. Basic knowledge of other health care disciplines and their role in client care.
