Job Title Managing Counsel and Director




































What is the opportunity?
As Managing Counsel and Director, you will support matters relating principally to RBC\xe2\x80\x99s Defined Contribution Pension Plan (a specimen plan offering made available to employers across the country) and other registered plans offered by RBC\'s Personal Banking and Investments and Wealth Management platforms in Canada. You will work directly with senior management, as well as their functional support groups on related strategic business initiatives and dealing with associated legal risk issues. What will you do?
  • As a senior lawyer with expertise in registered plans and pension standards legislation in Canada, you will be the primary lawyer supporting RBC\xe2\x80\x99s Defined Contribution Pension Plan (a specimen plan offering made available to employers across the country), as well as other registered plans offered by RBC Group Advantage, including Group RRSPs, Voluntary Retirement Savings Plans, Deferred Profit Sharing Plans and Group TFSAs.
  • You will also support non-group registered plans for all lines of business, with a primary focus on locked-in plans, and will provide additional support on Retirement Compensation Arrangements and Individual Pension Plans for the Wealth Management National Solutions Support Team.
  • You will work directly with senior management and other functional leaders and partners (including Compliance, Risk, Operations, etc.) on strategic business initiatives and all matters impacting registered plans, and advising on associated legal risks.
  • Manage the cost and performance of external counsel as required to support matters with a particular focus on negotiating alternative fee arrangements.
  • Coordinate and liaise with functional partners on new initiatives to mitigate legal risk and ensure compliance.
  • Collaborate with other lawyers in the Law Group, as well as other business support teams, and work closely with them to promote alignment to overall enterprise strategy and applicable lines of business.
What do you need to succeed? Must-have
  • The ideal candidate will have at least 8+ years of relevant registered plans and pensions experience gained at a law firm, in house or at a regulator.
  • JD from recognized law school, called to the Bar of a Canadian province/territory and membership in applicable law society or bar association
  • The role requires a strong ability to communicate effectively and concisely, to manage a high volume of diverse matters and to lead the analysis and delivery of sound, practical legal advice. The role involves dealing with multiple stakeholders and requires an ability to work collaboratively with various teams
