Primary Function:

This role will be responsible for policies, programs, and practices in areas of Total Rewards for Grainger Canada (GCAN). As a key strategic partner and resident expert in compensation and benefits, this role is responsible for the evaluation, planning, design and communication of total rewards programs and policies. Reporting to a US-based Director, Total Rewards, this role will play a crucial role in ensuring our compensation practices comply with Canadian labor laws, tax regulations, and other statutory requirements while keeping a pulse on market trends to ensure competitiveness

This role liaises with its counterparts across the Grainger business units to align GCAN\'s practices with Grainger global philosophies and strategies. The incumbent is a member of the global Total Rewards team and will partner closely with US based team members. Grainger Canada benefit administration will receive oversight and management via US based team members in partnership with this role.

Principal Duties & Responsibilities:

Compensation & Benefits

  • Act as a thought leader on total rewards through researching and staying up-to-date on current practices and trends. Make recommendations for changes and lead the design efforts to ensure GCAN\'s rewards practices are competitive within the marketplace;
  • Influence all levels of leadership within GCAN in the design and implementation of rewards programs that align with Grainger\'s global philosophies and GCAN\'s long-term and short-term goals
  • Advocate for adoption of any new processes or initiatives that positively impact our team members or people leader experiences
  • Responsible for the evaluation, planning, development, and implementation of compensation and benefits programs at GCAN that enable the management to attract, motivate, develop, and retain the very best talent. Areas of responsibility include job evaluation, broad-based pay structures and incentive plans, sales incentive plans, management incentive programs, long-term incentive plans, non-financial rewards and recognition programs. Will lead the ongoing evaluation and strategic design of group benefit plans, pension plans, short-term and long-term disability management programs, as well as work-life programs;
  • Partner with global benefits team in the US to manage all third-party service providers to ensure total rewards programs are effectively administered as per GCAN\'s policies and service standards;
  • Provide coaching to executives and HR managers on total rewards communications, respond to non-routine and escalated questions and issues regarding total rewards;
  • Partner with Legal to ensure legal and compliance of total rewards programs with applicable legislations and regulations.
  • Guide the team to work with the existing systems to maintain HR data integrity and fulfill various reporting needs
  • Provide support for the design, implementation and ongoing administration of total rewards programs including, key salary recommendations, and other reward related projects.
  • Collaborate with other functional compensation managers on various compensation topics, including job evaluation.
  • Lead the team in analyzing the effectiveness of all compensation programs and assist to develop appropriate models and facilitate design of pay ranges in partnership with the broader compensation team, as well as annual / quarterly incentive pay programs.
  • Utilize published surveys to establish appropriate market trends and review all job descriptions to provide appropriate management recommendations
  • Monitor required market data and develop salary structures for all compensation programs and maintain and update an effective HRIS system and evaluate all changes in same.
  • Lead the team in working with service providers in development, update, and delivery of educational and communication sessions and materials to promote plan members\' awareness and understanding of all Grainger Canada benefit and pension programs;
People & Team Leadership
  • Hire, develop, motivate, and retain a team of talented and highly engaged professionals to deliver best-in-class total rewards programs and processes that support GCAN\'s business strategies.
  • Coach team members, identify key talents and support them through their career advancements with Grainger
Job Requirements:

Preferred Education & Experience:
  • University degree with major in Business or Human Resources
  • 5+ years of progressive experience in total rewards management, compensation, pension and benefit administration
  • A strong leader who has the capacity to think beyond total rewards to the larger business as a whole and sees how total rewards can affect the entire business
Must have the ability to lead through the complexity of a national and geographically diverse matrix organization with international business partners; * Must have in-depth knowledge of the theories and practices of compensation, benefits and pensions

Must have the ability to work independently and/or lead teams, as well as provide creative solutions to business issues related to total rewards; * Demonstrate a mastery of consulting by effectively leading multiple projects, providing consulting advise, and interacting with and influencing senior management;
  • Must have expertise in incentive program design, job analysis, job evaluation and market pricing;
  • Must have knowledge and understanding of financial measures, accounting and tax.
  • Strong analytical skills and ability to conduct complex analyses to design effective incentive programs.
  • Bachelor\'s degree or equivalent education / experience with financial literacy; CHRP, CPP or GRP, CEBS are assets
  • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy while meeting deadlines
  • Proven research and analytical skills
  • 10 - 15% travel to Grainger U.S
and Canadian Grainger locations may be required

Work Environment:
  • Preferred location in Toronto or Winnipeg but will consider virtual candidates.
  • Ability to travel to various locations
Average 3-4 trips per year
