Position Summary

Research operations, infrastructure, systems and programs are funded by public and private organizations in the magnitude of hundreds of millions of dollars at UHN annually. Ensuring that this funding is utilized sustainably to support and grow the research enterprise requires the collective contribution of all stakeholders: scientists, trainees, support staff, research and operations leadership and external organizations. The Manager, Strategic Research Projects, works closely with these stakeholders to guide the strategic decision-making process when developing and implementing institution-level strategic projects. The Manager facilitates and leads complex multiple-stakeholder projects and ensures their alignment with strategic research priorities. The manager is also responsible for managing the performance and growth of the Strategic Research Projects team, its budget and the operational plan of the department.

Duties

  • Co-manages UHN\xe2\x80\x99s strategic projects in alignment with institutional research priorities and collaborates with the University of Toronto and other Toronto Academic Health Sciences Network hospitals to ensure harmonized and successful implementation; forecasts evolving process changes for UHN and proposes future action strategies to relevant stakeholders for managing/planning forward and implementing these changes.
  • Leads research initiative-related \xe2\x80\x98think tank\xe2\x80\x99 sessions with an ad hoc cross-functional group of individuals with requisite research, financial, planning and operations experience from across UHN\xe2\x80\x99s operations teams to focus on brainstorming new strategies for increasing operations sustainability, complying with evolving relevant internal/external policies, and filling infrastructure and operational gaps through process and communications improvement.
  • Plans and develops institution-wide communications for strategic projects; collates and reviews feedback; facilitates planning sessions and presents go-forward options to senior leadership for deliberation.
  • Assesses reviews, white papers and other information provided by government, industry and other stakeholders to monitor evolving research trends and challenges to the sustainability of research operations; distills and integrates this information to help maximize the success of strategic initiatives.
  • Leads the development and implementation of strategic projects to enhance research infrastructure, operations, systems and programs in collaboration with internal and external partners.
  • Monitors the local, national and global research and research operations landscape for opportunities to advance UHN strategic research priorities.
  • Supports the planning, development, implementation and reporting of strategic institutional research priorities.
Qualifications
  • At minimum, a PhD degree in Health science-related discipline, or recognized equivalent
  • Minimum four (4) years of project management experience required
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) preferred
  • Laboratory or clinical science background required
  • Computer proficiency required (Microsoft 365 suite, browser skills essential; VBA and knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite desirable)
  • Knowledge of and experience within healthcare required
  • Knowledge of applicable legislative, UHN and/or departmental policies required
  • Experience in writing and editing of scientific and technical documents required
