Manager, Sirch Bistro & Bakery (non Profit Social Enterprise)

Haliburton, ON, CA, Canada

Job Description

Full-time | Haliburton, ON | Daytime Hours (Tuesday-Saturday)

About SIRCH

SIRCH is a charitable organization that strengthens individual and community resilience through programs and social enterprises that build connection and reduce vulnerability.

Our

Bistro & Bakery

is one of those enterprises -- a warm, welcoming place where great food helps fund meaningful programs. We bake from scratch, serve wholesome meals, and reinvest every dollar earned into community good.

We're not a high-profit restaurant -- we're a mission-driven enterprise that believes in doing business with heart. But to keep doing good, we need to operate efficiently and sustainably. That's where you come in.

The Opportunity

We're seeking a

hands-on, business-savvy, and values-driven leader

to manage all aspects of the

SIRCH Bistro & Bakery

-- a small but well-loved non-profit eatery, currently open 8:30 a.m.-2 p.m. Tuesday to Saturday.

Your challenge (and opportunity) is to help bring the Bistro & Bakery to a place of financial sustainability, strengthen team performance, and ensure every decision reflects both SIRCH's

mission

and

bottom line

.

You'll supervise all kitchen, bakery, and front-of-house staff, streamline systems, simplify menus, and drive efficiencies while keeping morale high. You'll report directly to the Executive Director and be part of SIRCH's

Leadership Team

, working closely with senior management to build a model of excellence in social enterprise.

What You'll Do

Lead Operations with a Business Mind and a Mission Heart

Oversee all aspects of the Bistro and Bakery -- food production, service, ordering, HR and presentation. Implement recommendations for menu simplification, portion control, pricing, and longer hours to improve sustainability. Use data from the POS system to monitor costs, margins, and product performance. Ensure consistency in recipes, quality, and customer experience. Introduce and maintain systems for communication, such as a Kitchen Journal and formal weekly team meetings. Manage purchasing and stock control efficiently, reducing waste and unnecessary store runs.

Manage and Motivate the Team

Supervise all Bistro & Bakery staff (currently 4 full-time and 2 part-time) and provide clear expectations and accountability. Build a respectful, collaborative work environment that reflects SIRCH's six core values:
Ripple Effect o Can-Do Attitude o Creative Thinking o Levelling the Playing Field o Collaboration o Loyalty

Address performance issues fairly and directly when needed, maintaining alignment with leadership decisions and SIRCH's mission. Coach and mentor staff through change -- ensuring loyal, dedicated employees feel valued and included as new systems take root. Strengthen communication and teamwork between Bistro and Bakery staff (no silos). Work collaboratively with SIRCH's Food Security, Marketing and other staff.

Drive Profitability & Efficiency

Develop realistic goals to increase sales and reduce costs. Evaluate what's working -- and what's not -- to focus on high-margin items and efficient practices. Track key performance indicators (e.g., average sale, food cost percentage, labour ratio). Develop strong partnerships in the community to grow the social enterprise and support SIRCH's mission. Collaborate with the Marketing team on promotions and catering sales that support the Bistro's growth. Help design and implement a long-term plan for a financially self-sustaining, purpose-driven enterprise.

Align with Leadership

Work closely with the Executive Director to implement SIRCH's

strategic and financial priorities

for the Bistro & Bakery. Participate as an active member of the

Leadership Team

, sharing updates, challenges, and recommendations. Model collaboration, transparency, and solution-focused communication. Champion SIRCH's mission, values, and "

Kind First, Policy Second

" approach in all decisions.

Who You Are

You'll thrive here if you:

Bring both business sense and compassion to your leadership. Can make tough decisions respectfully and lead through change with clarity and care. See inefficiency as an opportunity to improve -- not to criticize. Know how to motivate and unify a small team. Understand that people matter as much as numbers -- and both are essential to success. Align yourself with SIRCH's leadership and work collaboratively toward shared goals. Value a workplace where kindness, integrity, and accountability coexist.

What You Bring

Required

Demonstrated experience managing a restaurant, cafe, or bakery (3+ years preferred). Strong leadership and communication skills -- able to guide a team through change. Solid understanding of cost control, menu planning, pricing, and food service operations. Culinary knowledge and respect for quality, consistency, and presentation. Familiarity with health and safety regulations, inventory management, and POS systems. Commitment to SIRCH's mission, vision, and values. Photos and interview are part of the job requirements.

Preferred

Experience in a

social enterprise

or non-profit environment. Proven ability to improve profitability in a small-scale operation. HR experience, including training, performance management, and coaching. Comfort with financial targets and data-informed decision-making. Familiarity with Impact Reporting, data bases and similar organizational tools.

Hours & Compensation

Full-time, salaried position --currently Tuesday to Saturday, 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Salary reflects our non-profit scale: modest but meaningful, with benefits. You'll be joining a purpose-driven organization where your leadership can make a visible, lasting difference.
