Reporting to the Director, Risk, Insurance & Claims Management, The Manager, Risk and Insurance, is responsible for the procurement and day-to-day management of the National Corporate Commercial Insurance Program. This includes managing the insurance-broker relationship in accordance with the client service agreement and applying specialized technical expertise in the preparation, management and planning the administration of the program. The Manager is also responsible for the appropriate transfer of risk to suppliers via contract insurance language and consulting with internal stakeholders with respect to identifying hazards and exposures within a self-insured retention.

Job Responsibilities

Below are the main job requirements and responsibilities for the Manager, Risk and Insurance:

  • Manages the corporate insurance portfolio which includes a broad range of complex Property, Casualty, Executive and Specialty Lines policies with premium volume of over $2M. Conducts analysis and evaluation of policy limits, retentions, terms, conditions and premiums to ensure that they are aligned with operations, corporate strategic plans and special projects.
  • Manages, prepares and submits the yearly insurance renewal submission, including: Liaising with Director, GM and Broker to develop renewal strategy; Request and Coordinate receipt of underwriting information with internal stakeholders including Real Estate, Finance, Transportation, Corporate Secretariat, Privacy, Security, Marketing, Legal and IT; Communicate and receive required underwriting information from the Group of Companies for shared insurance policies; Complete complex applications for signature of Director, GM, VP or CFO; Ensure submission is received by Broker in a timely manner to support renewal and marketing strategy
  • Manages the process for requests of Certificates of Insurance ensuring the Certificates comply with contract terms. Reviews Certificates of Insurance received by suppliers for accuracy and directs amendments where required.
  • Coordinates the timely marketing of the insurance program in conjunction with the insurance broker to negotiate broad terms of insurance coverage and cost competitive programs. Participates in meetings with markets to aid in negotiations and strengthen relationships.
  • Designs, implements and maintains regular monthly reporting practices for distribution to various executive stakeholders. Responsible for: reporting on status of insurance claims as part of the requirements of the Self-Insured Retention program; providing quarterly reporting in accordance with International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS); developing and maintaining a monthly risk management report; process owner for reporting and testing of control activities as required by Internal Controls for Financial Reporting (ICFR).
Job Responsibilities (continued)
  • Apprises the Director of particularly complex or difficult negotiations, placements, material changes in coverage or unfavourable premium indications
  • Establishes and maintains positive and proactive working relationships with internal and external stakeholders. Manages the Broker-client relationship in accordance with the client service agreement ensuring a high level of service and timely receipt of deliverables. On an ongoing basis, directs brokers to negotiate changes in coverages to comply with contractual requirements or special projects.
  • Provides Risk Management consultation as subject matter expert on risk and insurance. Drives superior customer service and responsiveness in providing guidance internally in response to a variety of inquiries regarding insurance coverage, policy contract interpretations, occurrence reporting and claims investigation and payment.
  • Maintains a network of internal and external contacts to regularly benchmark and research best practices to remain current on future trends and developments related to government standards, industry practices, new legislation, advances in technology, and programs related to municipal, provincial and federal regulations governing all aspects of insurance.
  • Completes research and undertakes special projects as assigned by the Director, Risk & Insurance Management, providing deliverables in a timely manner. Ensures the risk management and insurance requirements for new facilities are implemented during the planning and budget setting phase of the projects.
Qualifications

Education:
  • Completed post-secondary, preferably in business or law or an equivalent combination of education, experience and training
  • Completion of at least one of the following is required: Chartered Insurance Professional (CIP) and/or Canadian Risk Management (CRM) designation. )
Experience:
  • Minimum of 5-10 years of progressive and relevant work experience in an insurance company, insurance brokerage or risk management setting
Other Candidate Requirements:
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • One or more years of experience in a unionized environment an asset.
  • Ability to assess risk exposures and to understand and interpret Insurance Policy language
  • High degree of specialized technical expertise in commercial insurance and an understanding of Self-Insured Retentions
  • Ability to effectively communicate and liaise with multiple organizational functions at all organizational levels.
  • Knowledge of the Canada Post Act, the Insurance Act, the Highway Traffic Act and the various Provincial Statutes regulating the Automobile Insurance Industry
  • Proficient computer skills and competent with Microsoft Office programs.
  • Excellent team building and leadership skills and experience.
  • Sound organizational, analytical, judgement and decision-making skills with proven abilities in problem solving.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the principles and practices regarding access to information and protection of privacy.
  • Ability to communicate tactfully and diplomatically, and maintain a high degree of confidentiality and professionalism.
