Compensation Range $5,209.17 - $7,485.33 CAD Monthly

The Compensation Range is the span between the minimum and maximum base salary for a position. The midpoint of the range is approximately halfway between the minimum and the maximum and represents an employee that possesses full job knowledge, qualifications and experience for the position. In the normal course, employees will be hired, transferred or promoted between the minimum and midpoint of the salary range for a job.

Job Summary

The Laboratory of Dr. Leonard Foster is currently seeking to hire a Manager, Research and Laboratory Operations at the University of British Columbia (UBC) on the Vancouver campus. The successful candidate will be responsible for the overall lab management including finance and training and supervision of lab personnel, as well as research projects management.

Organizational Status

The incumbent will report to the Principal Investigator, Dr. Leonard Foster and work closely with the Operations Manager of the Proteomics Core Facility, other researchers, staff and students on a daily basis.

Work Performed

Major responsibilities of the position include:

Research Project Management

  • Manage research projects held with collaborators from within UBC or at other institutions. This entails acting as the primary contact point and ensuring the smooth project execution.
  • Prepare, compose and proof documents, including research grant applications and report documentation for funding agencies, sponsored research agreements and other contracts with non-academic research collaborators.
  • Assist in developing research agreements (e.g. with industrial collaborators) by preparing and managing contract budgets, communications, and formal reports on research progress and facility usage.
  • Participate in meetings with the research team, co-investigators, and collaborators to plan, develop, and strategize the research projects.
Lab Management
  • Manage all aspects of laboratory operations, including personnel management, and regularly report to the Principal Investigator.
  • Develop and maintain policies and procedures for the efficient administrative processes to organize and run laboratory activities effectively.
  • Responsible for laboratory finances; regularly monitor grant accounts, review financial statements, understand the budgets, and advise the PI on necessary actions.
  • Manage laboratory space and equipment.
  • Develop and deliver training and supervise all laboratory personnel in mass spectrometric analysis of proteins.
  • Establish and implement purchasing policies and procedures for the laboratory.
  • Act as the laboratory representative in a liaison capacity with other research laboratories and other academic units.
  • Ensure appropriate training certifications for new laboratory members and oversee the maintenance of certifications for existing members.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
Consequence of Error/Impact of Decisions

Consequence of errors could result in damage to sensitive scientific equipment, incorrect data and/or delays in projects, which might affect the experiments or results of others in the group, or lead to major delays in publishing, or loss of grant funding.

Supervision Received

Works under general direction within established policies, procedures and standards. Work reviewed against task objectives and conformity to standards.

Supervision Given

The incumbent will provide general direction to and supervision of research assistants, trainees and scholars in the research lab. The individual may supervise more junior staff that support facility operations.

Minimum Qualifications
University degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of two years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications
  • University degree in chemistry, biochemistry or related field preferred (M.Sc., Ph.D preferred).
  • Experience in a research environment including demonstrated training and supervisory experience preferred.
  • Demonstrate experience and/or mammalian cell cultures, protein analysis and purification.
  • Experience to dissect honey bees and extract protein for proteomic analysis
  • Experience to operate quadrupole time-of-flight and Orbitrap mass spectometers, familiarity with MSQuant, MaxQuant, Proteus, Proteome Discoverer and Spectrum Mill software packages.
  • Ability to initiate and conduct research projects.
  • Ability to prioritize, multi-task, and work effectively under pressure to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to exercise initiative, judgement, tact and confidentiality.
  • Ability to problem solve.
  • Ability to maintain accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work both independently and within a team environment.
