Position Purpose:

The Research Scientist is responsible for developing, funding, and implementing the Zoo's specialized research programs, supporting the Career Pathways program through training of highly qualified personnel (HQP), and communicating science through academic, governmental and public platforms. The position carries administrative, technical and scientific duties including establishing partnerships nationally and internationally. This position will assist and provide support in implementing the Strategic Plan.


This role requires expertise in cellular and molecular techniques for in vitro embryo development in non-domestic species, including advanced cellular reprogramming and gamete and embryo culture skills. The candidate must demonstrate the ability to function as an independent researcher and effectively mentor and oversee postdoctoral fellows.

Core Role Responsibilities:

Develops research plan to ensure scientific excellence and relevance in the scientific area of focus. Develops new and strengthens existing collaborations with academic, zoological, governmental and similar organizations involved in conservation research or action. Communicates results of research projects to Zoo staff, volunteers, the scientific and zoo communities and the public, and interacts with the media as a scientific resource or expert. Actively seeks external funding for research program in consultation with CSO and TZ Wildlife Conservancy staff as appropriate. Ensures efficient utilization of the human and financial resources to achieve established performance. Oversees supervision of postdoctoral fellows, and training of HQP, including MSc, PhD, and other candidates within the Career Pathways Program. Undertakes adjunct professor status with collaborating university and may undertake teaching responsibilities at undergraduate and graduate levels as appropriate. Responsible for care and maintenance of their assigned workspace (e.g. laboratories) and recommends purchase of research equipment. Provides reports of research activities for review by various committees and boards. Participates on scientific society committees and other voluntary service roles.

Technical Knowledge and Skills:

Must have a PhD degree from a recognized institution in the scientific area of focus and research experience, preferably working with non-domestic animals. Must have 5 years progressive related experience as an independent researcher, with 2 at a supervisory level. Must have technical, research and HQP training experience specifically related to the scientific area of focus. Experience in a unionized environment is preferred. Demonstrated ability to publish results in peer reviewed journals and obtain external funding. Ability to prepare research papers, reports and give formal presentation to groups and individuals. A proven ability to effectively lead and motivate staff and to lead work teams. Possess experience in the preparation and administration of an operating budget. Must be knowledgeable in the use of computerized programs and systems, including Microsoft Office 365. Well-developed interpersonal skills, along with strong communications skills including excellent writing skills and the ability to speak confidently in public. Must have a working knowledge of the Ontario Occupational Health & Safety Act and WHMIS legislation. Must be able to work weekends and holidays.
