Position Overview The Research Services Office in the Office of the Vice-President (Research) invites applications for a Manager, Outreach & Education. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 2 years (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension. Working in this context, the Office of the Vice-President (Research) (VPR) is responsible to enhance institutional research capacity, maximize opportunities for impact, measure and communicate research impact, and oversee administrative and regulatory files. Within the VPR Portfolio, the Research Services Office (RSO) supports researchers and their teams to navigate funding, contracts, ethics, compliance, and commercialization. Research Services is comprised of 75+ staff that include 5 directors, 15 managers, 5 divisions and 14 high performance units that generate over $500 million in annual sponsored research. Within RSO, Research Security acts as a resource to faculty and to the research enterprise to navigate new and changing requirements from the federal and provincial governments and international regulations on national security guidelines related to research partnerships. It serves as a one-stop shop in providing information and guidance on how to safeguard research from theft, interference, or unwanted transfer of knowledge and that results in ways individuals and teams do not intend. Research Security is a division comprised of three units that include: Education and Outreach, Due Diligence and Compliance, Mitigation, and Special Investigations. This position will lead the Education and Outreach team. The Manager, Outreach and Education reports to the Director of Research Security, and will be responsible to oversee all day-to-day activities related to outreach and education and working with other units across the University. The manager will have full leadership accountability for a team of two staff with support and mentorship from the Director. It will have responsibility for awareness campaigns, setting up a research security website, organizing in-person workshops, developing program materials, providing a \'train-the-trainer\' model to support researchers, faculty and staff within the University of Calgary, and coordinating activity with relevant UCalgary stakeholders. Position Description Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Responsible for establishing clear point of contact for researchers on Researcher Security
  • Establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships with both internal and external stakeholders including with international partners.
  • Work closely with other units within Research Services Office
  • Liaise with other federal and provincial government departments to establish best practises and tool kits to support the needs of the university
  • Acts as a leader on campus to coordinate activity and establish relationships with 5 vectors and other relevant units across campus.
  • Managing website, provide newsletters and information on new tools, training modules and threats
  • Will put together communication plans, create training materials and set up in person workshops to support learning in research security and work with other teams within the university
  • Works with the Research Facilitator(s) to plan appropriate outreach and training offerings
  • Works with the team to guide the development and preparation of materials and suggests, and creates new online course hiring outside experts as needed and managing that contract
  • Recruit staff and develop an effective, happy/healthy and high achieving team
  • Supervises and directs the workload of a team of 2. Responsible for mentorship, hiring, support, ongoing feedback, performance management, disciplinary action up to and including termination, and trainin
  • Oversees training of staff and university researchers regarding both internal and external regulations surrounding institutional research programs and ensure that budget finalization and reporting processes meet funder requirements
  • Works with the compliance and due diligence team to ensure that all information is shared and data from the due diligence reviews feeds back to the policies and practises
Qualifications / Requirements:
  • Undergraduate or Graduate degree in business management, sciences, social sciences, education, or communication
  • Experience in education or communications fields is an asset with knowledge of geopolitics and national security preferred
  • Minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in a related field
  • Experience in managing teams and projects
  • Experience in teaching, and pedagogical development preferred
  • Demonstrated experience in a research environment, preferably at a major university or college, government office, and in administrative procedures
  • Outstanding communications, writing, and facilitation skills; strong project management acumen required
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills; able to develop positive relationships at any level
  • Previous success in building consensus and influencing teams made up of peers and individuals that do not have direct reporting relationships
  • Strong knowledge of research security
  • Results-driven individual with a history of delivering high quality work
  • Ability to interpret, analyze and disseminate critical information to various stakeholders
  • Excellent communication skills and motivational speaker
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to interact with senior administrative staff in multiple research security areas to foster collaboration
  • Strong knowledge of Canadian Safeguarding Research standards and regulations (i.e. National Security Guidelines for Research Partnerships, Export Controls, Data Management Strategy, Cyber Security Plans)
  • Demonstrated ability to apply high level critical thinking consistently and effectively, sound decision-making and communication skills in a high volume, fast-paced environment is required
  • Highly proficient use of Microsoft applications (Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint is required and various OSINT Software)
  • Strong research skills with an ability to prepare detailed guidance resources and policies is an asset.
