Your opportunity:

Under general direction of the Dean, the Manager of Communications contributes to the Faculty’s overall vision, goals and mission by executing all aspects of the Faculty’s communications and public relations requirements. Responsibilities include developing and implementing strategic communications and public relations programs, and developing and implementing plans to increase the Faculty’s profile and reputation. This also includes oversight of all aspects of the Faculty’s website, providing ongoing strategy to facilitate optimal use of online space for all Faculty units. This may include incorporating social media tools as well as recommending additional interactive tools to address the needs of all target audiences. The incumbent will also review communications plans and incorporates new programs, priorities, campaigns, and maintain strategic direction.

The Manager of Communications will assume primary responsibility for developing and enhancing the profile and public outreach of the Faculty through a comprehensive and wide range of activities such as web, media, and strategic communication development. This will include developing and implementing strategies to engage internal and external stakeholders, including the academic and research community at the University of Toronto, international peer institutions, alumni, donors and friends in conjunction with the Advancement office, Dental community, current and prospective students, and media and government contacts.

Your responsibilities will include:


  • Developing and implementing marketing plans to promote programs, events and/or initiatives that support strategic objectives
  • Developing and implementing marketing plans to support business development and revenue-generating strategies and/or activities
  • Acting as an authorized spokesperson on behalf of the Division, Faculty or unit to members of the media
  • Developing and implementing digital communication campaigns and programs that support strategic objectives, including campaigns to support the Office of Advancement & Alumni Relations
  • Developing and maintaining guidelines and procedures for web and digital media standards, content and use
  • Conducting detailed data analysis to inform management decision making
  • Drafting and editing content for print and/or online communications channels
  • Reviewing and approving content for publications.
Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree with a focus on marketing, public relations or mass communication; or acceptable combination of equivalent experience.
  • Minimum five years experience in marketing and communications, preferably in the post-secondary sector.
  • Demonstrated experience in planningand implementing integrated communication projects.
  • Experience in developing, implementing and evaluating marketing communication campaigns, marketing research projects, brand development initiatives.
  • Experience in overseeing the creation, development and management of web-based and social media marketing communication tools.
  • Excellent copywriting and editing skills, including knowledge of English grammar and spelling; and the ability to edit and proofread.
  • Experience in writing communication content for various platforms including email, social media, and print.
  • Strong project management skills with a successful track record in managing a variety of creative, persuasive and cost effective marketing communication projects.
  • Relevant experience with market and competitor research skills, ability to facilitate focus groups, design and implement surveys and develop and write proposals.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities while meeting deadlines and budgets.
  • Strong interpersonal skills; ability to work well with others across multiple departments; ability to resolve conflict.
  • Superior oral and written communication skills, including well-developed presentation/public speaking skills andabilities
  • Proficient with personal computers and appropriate software packages including word processing, online content management systems, spreadsheets, databases and web and desktop publishing/graphic design
  • Knowledge of the latest electronic and social media marketing tools and approaches such as web practices and learning portals.

Pay Scale Group & Hiring Zone:
USW Pay Band 15 - $86,011 with an annual step progression to a maximum of $109,993. Pay scale and job class assignment is subject to determination pursuant to the Job Evaluation/Pay Equity Maintenance Protocol.
