Job Description


The DynaLIFE Base Lab Microbiology department operates 24/7 in order to provide quality service to acute care hospitals, long-term care facilities, and community clinics across the Edmonton, North and Central Zones of Alberta and to remote and rural communities in Northwest Territories and Nunavut. Our Microbiology team partners with stakeholders and plays a key role in student training, antimicrobial stewardship, public health, and infection prevention and control. The primary purpose of the Manager, Microbiology is to manage and be accountable for all aspects of the Microbiology operations at DynaLIFE\xe2\x80\x99s Base Lab.

Major Functions and Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic leadership and direction to the Microbiology team at the Base Lab.
  • Establish Departmental annual goals that support the overall strategic direction of the organization.
  • Work closely with Microbiologists to ensure department procedures, equipment and protocols are up-to-date, relevant, meet exacting laboratory standards and provide excellent lab services for patients and care providers.
  • Prepare and maintain annual departmental budget requirements.
  • Supervisory responsibilities related to recruitment, selection and employee performance management including both unionized and non-unionized staff.
  • Engagement responsibilities including but not limited to: developing and maintaining cooperative and positive working relationships with all key stakeholders, providing the highest possible service to patients, care providers, and coworkers.
  • Ensure all accreditation requirements are met on an ongoing basis.
  • Ensures quality control standards are consistently and accurately performed. Taking corrective action for any deficiencies as per established protocols.
  • Ensure that all equipment is properly maintained and in top working order. Maintain positive working relationships with vendors to ensure instruments are working at optimal performance, service is performed as per established schedules, ad hoc service provided when necessary and any issues with instrument performance are addressed in a timely manner.
  • Ensure safety policies and practices are followed as per established protocols.
  • Work closely with the Microbiologists at Base Lab to implement new technologies and methodolgies.
  • Work collaboratively with the microbiology teams across the province to standardized protocols and workflows where possible.
  • Liaise with other departments as required.
  • Provide technical guidance and support to employees.
  • Ensure that departmental KPIs monitored and all are met. Ensure any lapses in KPIs are reported immediately and remedial action plans implemented.
  • Identify and define operational metrics and workload volumes for the purpose of achieving operational requirements.
  • Manage inventories of supplies and reagents for all testing in the lab and work with the Procurement team to ensure adequate inventories are maintained to support lab operations.
  • Coordinate the implementation of new technologies and tests.
  • Strong working knowledge of all methodologies and instrumentation typically found in a Microbology laboratory.
  • Participate in selection processes of new equipment, methodologies and reagents.
  • As required in conjuction with the VP, Analytical Operations and medical staff, recommends test menu changes, performs facility planning and equipment selection appropriate to the test menu

Required Experience
  • Familiarity with equipment and instrumentation typically found in a microbiology laboratory
  • 3 - 5 years experience in a managerial role or 5 - 7 years in a leadership role.
  • 3 - 5 years experience in a laboratory role, preferably in a large Microbiology lab.
  • Knowledge of Collective Agreement interpretation
  • Knowledge of company policies and procedures
  • Working knowledge of CPSA and CAP accreditation standards and guidelines is an asset
Minimum Qualifications
  • Certified Medical Laboratory Technologist including the retention of registration with CMLTA annually
  • Successful completion of CSMLS examination
  • Biohazard safety training
  • WHMIS training
