The Land Protection division of the NS Department of Agriculture is responsible for the management and maintenance of the provincial dykeland system in four main regions under the Agricultural Marshland Conservation Act. The four regions are Colchester, Cumberland, Hants and Western: having a total of 81 marshes, 240 km of dyke and 250 aboiteau. The dykeland system protects 17,000 hectares of marsh. In addition to protecting highly productive agricultural land, the dyke system protects high value assets such as highways, communities, railway, windmills and cultural sites. This provincial dykeland system is considered critical infrastructure.

About Our Opportunity
As the Manager Land Protection, you will oversee the management of the provincial dykeland system. The Manager will oversee operations employing human, financial and physical resources to address a diverse of operational and maintenance opportunities including land protection, climate change, fish passage, and water quality management that impacts government, industry and the public. The Manager will work closely with landowners and incorporated Marsh Bodies throughout the province in protecting and enhancing Agricultural Marsh Lands and the province's system of dykes and flood control systems. The Manager is responsible for leadership in development of programs, services and policies that enhance Land Protection in agriculture and represents the department with other government departments, researchers, industry groups and the public on Land Protection.
Qualifications and Experience
The successful candidate will have a minimum undergraduate degree, preferably in Agriculture, Engineering, or Environmental Sciences with three years' experience in a management or senior position or an acceptable combination of education and experience may be considered. They will demonstrate strong leadership, interpersonal and communication skills, their ability to manage budgets and physical resources, and to make sound decisions in ambiguous situations. The candidate must have leadership and management skills and be capable of establishing and maintaining effective team based cultures managing multiple priorities and meeting deadlines.
Through regular contact with the Land Protection team, you ensure the efficient and effective operation and maintenance of the regional dykeland infrastructure.
Experience with the following are considered assets:
Management or Supervisory experience.
As the ideal candidate, you are efficient at coordinating priorities, organizing and planning the management operations of our fast-paced environment. Your effective communication skills, both oral and written, are essential for collaborating with government and external representatives (for example landowners, Mi'kmaq, contractors and consultants). You use sound judgement and problem-solving skills when determining and establishing client service delivery targets. Consistently, you maintain a professional and courteous disposition and hold a high standard for client and customer service.
