Position Summary:

The Manager, Human Research Ethics, is responsible for providing leadership and support for pan-University compliance with regards to ethics review activities in alignment with national and international human research requirements and standards, provincial regulations and institutional policies. The Manager, Human Research Ethics provides day-to-day oversight of ethics review and related activities through management of Human Research Ethics Unit (HREU) roles responsible for interface between Research Ethics Boards (REBs) and researchers, delegated ethics review and continuing ethics review processes and is also responsible for managing existing and developing new and enhanced programming for the HREU\'s Quality Assurance Program (QAP). Manager, Human Research Ethics ensures that communication of ethical requirements and standards are appropriately communicated to all University divisions on an ongoing basis, with focus on new requirements as they emerge to ensure continuous evolution in alignment with compliance across the University. The Manager participates in highly confidential reviews of research integrity complaints and research misconduct allegations that involve human participants or their data.

Essential Qualifications:

Education:

Master\'s degree in a health science or social science field, PhD preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Experience:

Five (5) years\' progressive experience in research ethics administration including experience working with requirements for Health Canada regulated trials, databases and biobanks and international research, experience consulting, developing, advising on and implementing research ethics processes, procedures and guidelines, across all levels of a large and/or decentralized organization. Experience with regulation and policy interpretation and application across a wide range of research disciplines. Prior experience developing and delivering organizational training. Experience managing staff, preferably within a union environment, is a strong asset.

Skills:

In-depth knowledge of related regulations, Tri-Agency and research granting bodies requirements regarding human research ethics, as well as human research ethics guidelines nationally and internationally and best practices.

Ability to develop, mentor, lead, and manage a diverse group of professionals and to lead the team to meet new and changing requirements.

Exceptional interpersonal skills to bring together variety of stakeholders across the University to common goals through influence, subject matter expertise, and project management skills.

Demonstrated analytical skills with ability to develop quality assurance requirements, to develop reporting and analytical data guidelines and to assimilate complex information and prepare briefs, reports and to present on data findings.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills, diplomacy, judgement and discretion. Strong oral and written communication and interpersonal skills and presentation and training facilitation skills to reach a wide diversity of stakeholders including all levels of the University.

Ability to work independently with a high level of initiative; to adapt to changing needs, and a strong problem-solving orientation along with superior organizational skills

Other:

Skilled with Microsoft Office Suite, and online ethics submission and review software or equivalent.

Position schedule is full-time (36.25 hours) on weekdays during University business hours of 8:45 am to 5:00 pm, with additional hours requirement to be meet operational needs including weekends and evenings.
