Our Team

The Health, Safety, and Risk Manitoba Team provides leadership in terms of execution of the health, safety, and operational risk management strategies for our Manitoba Operations. In doing so the team enables the operations to meet business objectives and achieve outstanding outcomes focused on prioritizing, planning, and delivering on performance improvement areas.

The Opportunity

We are currently seeking a Health, Safety & Risk Manager to join our Manitoba Operations in Thompson, Manitoba. This is a permanent position working on site.

The Health, Safety & Risk Manager will provide leadership for the operations in the development and improvement of safety and health performance so that the operations can achieve world-class performance and meet business goals. The manager will engage and influence the leadership teams across Manitoba in the leadership of safety and health. They will develop and integrate systems and define appropriate use of technology within the existing business model to build capability of Safety and Health for future performance in the operations.

Additionally, in this position the candidate will:

  • Engage the Manitoba Operations in the development and improvement of Vales Safety, Health & Risk standards, systems, and performance.
  • Lead a team of Health Safety and Risk professionals across the various operations to ensure that plant level Health Safety and Risk are understood and managed.
  • Ensure the Manitoba Operations is compliant with statutory requirements, legislated regulations, policies, work standards and governance requirements.
  • Provide leadership, guidance, and support to the Operations teams to ensure effectiveness in the following key elements:
  • Vale Production System (VPS), Vale\xe2\x80\x99s system for managing.
  • Critical Activity Requirements (CARs)
  • Critical Risk Management (CRM)
  • HIRA (Hazard Identification and Risk Analysis)
  • Process Safety Management
  • Incident management
  • Ensure consistent and effective execution of safety, health and environment management systems, standards, and policies.
  • Collaborate with senior government and union officials on topics pertaining to Health, Safety and Risk.
  • Continue to implement the Critical Risk Management, Leadership in the Field and High Impact Risk Assessment programs and ensure embedding at the operations.
  • Lead the Emergency Response and Crisis Management teams for the Manitoba Operations this will include Rope Rescue, Confined Space Rescue, Mine Rescue and Fire Rescue.
  • Develop and implement the health and safety management system in line with Vale Base Metals requirements.
  • Implement and improve the occupational health program.
  • Develop and implement safety and health improvement plans.
  • Ensure significant incident investigations provide clear root cause analysis and mitigation identifications are established to limit reoccurrences.
  • Ensure risk management processes are in place so that the risks are identified, classified and mitigations are in place.
  • Ensure clear expectations and a robust process for management of contractors is in place.
About You

Education:
  • Undergraduate degree in Engineering, applied science or related field.
  • Post graduate completion or certification of a Health and Safety program.
Experience:
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in Health, Safety and Risk management
  • Experience in an Underground Mining operation would be considered an asset.
  • Demonstrated experience with safety systems and methods.
Skills:
  • Minimum of 5 years in a leadership role with experience in Health Safety and Risk
  • Demonstrated ability to motivate, coach, influence and collaborate with others to build effective working relationships.
  • Strong Work & Business Management Skills (resource, planning & work prioritization management, results focused, finance & budgeting knowledge).
  • Expert knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety Act and regulations, international standards and injury management
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to convert complexity to simplicity.
  • Excellent presentation development skills.
  • Results focused with strong analytical, planning, organizational and time management skills. Ability to manage changing priorities.
  • Software skills in MS Office products.
