Position Overview

The Department of Family Medicine in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Manager, First Nations Regional Opioids. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 1 year (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

The First Nations Knowledge-to-Action Hub will strengthen the Alberta Health Co-Management Committee\'s Opioids task force\'s capacity to be responsive to First Nations in Alberta to identify their own drug poisoning-related priorities, as well as to plan, implement, and evaluate responses. Engagement protocols, consensus-building processes, critical research methods, as well as partnerships and infrastructure already established by the lead\'s networks will serve as resources to quickly mobilize the hub for meaningful knowledge-sharing and action.

This position reports to the Principal Investigator.

The ideal candidate will serve a front-facing role in promoting harm reduction and evidence-informed models of care among First Nations, regularly engaging with leadership, health directors, and service providers to identify priorities that this research team can advance.
Travel may be required to sites throughout Alberta.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Educational Deliverables
  • Act as a educator in refining learning objectives from already-developed social determinants of health knowledge and teaching resources
  • Promote community-based healing from multi-generational trauma
  • Broaden attention around healing to include prevention prior to crisis onset and harm reduction in face of a multi-faceted crisis affecting all aspects of communities
  • Enhance primary health care capacity for alternative pain management, appropriate diagnosis for pain, and rehabilitation services
  • Engage critical health professional education in anti-racism and structural competency
  • Strengthen community-based knowledge around opioids and other substances of misuse by promoting exchange of expert insights & local experiences from diverse contexts
  • Address the role of health professions in prescription drug misuse by working with health professional bodies and providers to build accountability and strategies to mitigate prescription diversion & inappropriate prescribing
  • Establish and maintain effective, productive relationships with staff, peers, immediate supervisor and senior management and with the campus community.
  • Manage own time effectively and ensure immediate reports to manager to keep them informed of activities and progress of work
  • Demonstrate strong communication, team and managerial skills, and an ability to exercise judgment within established guidelines
  • On occasion, travel to clinical and community sites to develop deepened understanding and engagement with potential training content when needed
  • Expand educational resources and policy priorities related to Indigenous health equity and harm reduction
  • Use medical education for improved outcomes to enhance Indigenous community-based harm reduction, addictions treatment, and possibly chronic disease management
  • Research Support
  • Though communication and an advisory process with the community develop surveys and interview questions
  • Analyze impact data and organizing it into diverse knowledge outputs
  • Keep office and work area clean and safe
  • Generate PowerPoint presentations and posters on behalf of teams, to be used when presenting to various internal and external stakeholders
  • Lead with presenting, as required
  • Generate and refine various reports as required by the team. May require presentation of reports to various stakeholders
  • Assist in preparation of data collection, particularly through feedback to research associate and assistants, as well as storage and analysis
  • Collect, consolidate, cross-tabulate and format data from various sources to prepare draft reports and manuscripts
  • Staff Management:
  • Responsible for working with Principal investigator to determine positions that would support the strategic goals of the Research group
  • Manages the creation of job profiles, hiring, and onboarding of staff
  • Performs and engages staff in annual performance reviews
  • When required, performs disciplinary, including terminations, actions
  • Oversees the complete range of human resource management for operational staff
  • Ensures all staff have a Hazard Assessments in place to reduce risk for their position
Qualifications / Requirements:
  • Minimum Master\'s in adult learning/education or social science, PhD preferred with background in education and/or social sciences related to learning
  • Minimum 5 years of research-related experience
  • Minimum 5 years of community engagement work
  • Experience working with Indigenous communities and/or vulnerable communities and knowledge on First Nations landscapes in Alberta an asset
  • Experience with teaching in contexts of social inequity and/or teaching in health professional settings a strong asset
  • A combination of education and experience will be considered
  • Intermediate to advanced skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint); Internet skills
  • Academic database search skills
  • Knowledge and understanding of Indigenous realities impacting health
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Strong inter-cultural communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability for professional report writing
  • Demonstrated ability for teaching via diverse media
  • Ability to problem solve in complex situations
  • Demonstrated strong communication, team and customer service skills, and an ability to exercise judgment within established guidelines
  • Must be open to learning and development, and be willing to accept new challenges and assignments
  • A collaborative approach to research and partnership-building
  • A positive attitude and the ability to work independently and as part of a team are critical to success
  • Knowledge on Health Co-Management protocols, and knowledge on OTC
  • Knowledge on what NNADAP is and does and its partnership with Health Co-Management
  • Knowledge and experience on what is being done through Alberta Health Services and their approach to the opioid crisis
