Cape Breton University invites applications for the position Manager, Facility Operations in the Department of Facilities Management.The Facilities Management Department provides a range of services including the alteration and maintenance of existing facilities, project management, utilities services, the maintenance of residences, and management of the Canada Games Complex. The objective of the Department is to effectively and efficiently deliver a multitude of diverse functions and services in support of the University\'s overall mission.The Manager, Facility Operations is responsible for the management of trades personnel involved in the operation, maintenance and alteration of existing facilities, ensuring that all jobs are completed safely, efficiently and on time within regulatory guidelines. In addition, the Manager will be required to contribute to a safe CBU campus through work with the CBU Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committee (JOHSC), the University Safety Officer, Deans, Directors and Chairs. The Manager will deal with all manner of client issues, complaints and concerns pertaining to the building environment, with an ability to identify the specific issue or concern and determine how it can be resolved.Qualifications of this role are:
Minimum of ten (10) years in maintenance and/or construction. Candidates with equivalent education and significant relevant experience will be considered, certification in a trade (red seal) an asset.
Five (5) years supervisory or management experience.
Demonstrated ability to manage personnel in a unionized environment.
Ability to work a flexible schedule, including responding to emergency calls during evenings and weekends.
Strong interpersonal skills and an ability to work cooperatively and effectively with faculty, staff, and students.
Proven ability to review and interpret technical drawings and specifications.
Thorough knowledge of construction and contracting methods, Workers Compensation, and contractor insurance requirements.
Thorough knowledge of distributed control systems.
Knowledge of regulatory procedures, provincial Codes/Standards.
Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions of building trades, the N.S. OHS Act, WHMIS and the Construction Safety Association of Nova Scotia.
Proven knowledge of safe work procedures.
Physically fit as the position requires extensive walking.
