Under the direction of the Director, Marketing, Brand & Communications, the Manager of External Communications is responsible for helping advance and execute the firm's external communications strategy, with a dual focus on digital engagement and media relations.



This is an excellent opportunity for an out-of-the-box thinker and agile communicator who embraces emerging technologies like generative AI. The ideal candidate will have at least 10 years of experience in external communications, public relations, and digital marketing--preferably within a legal, corporate, or professional services environment. This position is being posted as this is a new role for the department.


Please note that this role offers a hybrid workweek. Each week will combine both working at home for a few days and working in the office for the balance. Your hybrid schedule will start once you join McMillan!




What You'll Do




Lead and execute the communications strategy, tactics and activities that elevate the firm's reputation and visibility across digital channels and media Oversee social media promotion, online campaigns, and website content to ensure brand alignment and audience engagement Manage the external communications calendar and advise on the development of all related content and materials Supervise and mentor a team of three specialists--writer, social media and website--fostering collaboration and professional growth Draft and review social media and digital content for accuracy, clarity, and consistency with brand alignment Collaborate with lawyers and business development teams to develop client outreach messaging, thought leadership campaigns and promote events, webinars, and speaking opportunities Support leaders and various stakeholders in preparing news releases and coordinate timely distribution of press releases Leverage networks with journalists and industry media contacts to pitch opportunities for earned media Serve as one of the contacts for media inquiries, monitor media coverage and analyze industry trends to provide timely insights and recommendations Analyze communications metrics and prepare reports to support decision making and knowledge sharing Continuously identify opportunities to improve tools, channels, and content delivery methods

What You'll Bring




Bachelor's degree in communications, Public Relations, Digital Marketing, Journalism, or a related field Minimum of 10 years of experience in external communications, including social media management, website content, and media relations with a proven track record of success Minimum 7 years' experience leading a marketing team Advanced written, verbal, and visual communication skills with a keen eye for tone, clarity, and accuracy Strong organizational and project management skills, with attention to detail and capable of managing multiple priorities Collaborative, curious, and passionate about storytelling, and you excel at translating complex subjects into clear, compelling narratives Ability to build and leverage relationships with journalists, editors, and media outlets as well as firm members across all levels of the organization Professional discretion and sound judgment when handling confidential or sensitive information Resilient under pressure; proactive, adaptable, and comfortable working independently or as part of a team Proficiency in generative AI, Microsoft Office, SharePoint, Microsoft Teams, and other related software

Salary range: $113,000 - $123,000 annually
