TransEd Valley Line LRT is the first piece of the Valley Line project in Edmonton. Connecting Millwoods to downtown Edmonton, the Valley Line allows commuters to go from the South East of Edmonton to any where the LRT stops.
A typical day for the Manager - Communications and Public Affairs
Strategic Communications Planning:
Develops and implements integrated communications and marketing strategies for the VLS LRT Operations, aligned with corporate and operational objectives.
Public Safety and Passenger Outreach:
Supports the City of Edmonton in planning and executing the Passenger and Public Safety Outreach Program during the operations phase. Develops targeted communication strategies to reach relevant stakeholder groups and the general public.
Stakeholder and Customer Engagement:
Serves as the primary point of contact for stakeholders regarding all matters related to the VLS LRT, including service disruptions, customer feedback, and public inquiries. Works closely with the City to support broader transit and marketing initiatives.
Internal Communications:
Leads the development of internal employee communication initiatives to foster engagement, provide operational updates, and align staff with safety and service priorities.
Media Relations and Spokesperson Training:
Acts as a key liaison with media and external partners. Coordinates all media responses and press interactions. Trains and prepares senior management to act as official spokespeople in the event of an emergency or critical incident.
Social Media Strategy and Monitoring:
Develops and maintains dynamic social media plans and content protocols relevant to LRT services. Actively monitors social media platforms to identify trends, respond to public concerns, and ensure accurate, timely information is shared regarding service interruptions, special events, and safety updates.
Collaboration with City and ETS Communications:
Works in close coordination with the City of Edmonton and Edmonton Transit Service (ETS) to ensure consistent and timely messaging across platforms, especially in relation to transit network updates and joint initiatives.
What you will bring to the team
Bachelor's degree in Communications, Marketing, Public Affairs, or related field
Associate degree in same combined with related experience acceptable
A minimum of ten years' experience of corporate communications or public affairs in a corporate, public service, political and/or agency environment
Extensive experience in developing and implementing strategic communications and marketing plans
Demonstrated negotiation, problem-solving and priority-setting abilities
Demonstrated experience in issues and crisis management, and in managing sensitive and complex issues
Demonstrated experience with technology tools necessary for communications and engagement activities
Demonstrated strong media relations skills, along with knowledge of how to communicate public policy issues
