Manager, Business Banking Credit Risk Strategies & Analytics

MANDATE

The Manager, Business Banking Credit Risk Strategies & Analytics supports the Business Banking teams to make quality, fact-based decisions to achieve business objectives and optimize returns from the risks it takes. She/He uses analytical solutions and a deep understanding of the business to help set risk appetite, design sophisticated decision support tools, inform business initiatives, monitor business performance and identify issues and opportunities.

The role has four primary areas of accountability which are described in more detail below. Across all of these areas, he/she acts as a trusted advisor to the business, providing specialized consulting, analytical and technical support. This includes working with stakeholders to identify business objectives and requirements, conducting effective analysis to support decisions, presenting findings and recommendations in a simple, clear way to drive action and ensuring alignment across stakeholders. While this role focuses on Business Banking across North America, it may also work on broader enterprise-wide initiatives.

Develop risk strategies and decision support tools

  • Deeply understand Business Banking\xe2\x80\x99s priorities, credit risk policies, risk appetite and risk/return dynamics, including the drivers of risk and profitability
  • Develop and maintain risk strategies and decision support tools using analytics, predictive modelling and business rules to optimize decisions and productivity. Includes Automated Lending Decisions for new loan requests and account management strategies for existing customers.
  • Support implementation of new or modified risk strategies and decision support tools with simulation, validation testing and reporting requirements to evaluate their effectiveness.
  • Lead/participate in the design, development, implementation and management of core business/group processes that leverage these decision support tools.
Identify portfolio issues and opportunities through effective portfolio monitoring
  • Develop and implement portfolio performance monitoring framework, including required reporting, to understand and communicate overall and segment level portfolio performance
  • Develop and implement monitoring framework to regularly assess performance of risk strategies and decision support tools
  • Consult with stakeholders to continuously improve consistency and transparency of risk measurement, metrics and reporting
  • Regularly review available reporting and conduct ad-hoc analysis to proactively identify emerging issues, trends and opportunities
  • Synthesize findings and make recommendations to address issues, improve portfolio performance and/or capture opportunities
  • Represent the decision strategy function during internal/external regulatory audits and/or examinations and produce reporting and documentation as requested
Inform business initiatives and decisions
  • Conduct independent analysis and assessment to resolve strategic risk issues and recommend solutions.
  • Conduct risk and profitability analysis to inform line of business priorities and roadmap
  • Answer key questions and generate insights with data/analysis to inform business and risk initiatives
  • Provide input for ongoing operational programs and analytical approaches to manage risk
Drive innovation and ensure data quality
  • Work with internal and external stakeholders to understand the capabilities of risk models and core risk systems to ensure effectiveness of risk decision strategies
  • Work with data owners to discover and select available data sources from internal sources and external vendors to fulfill analytical needs
  • Research existing/emerging risk management best practices and recommend enhancements
  • Coordinate the management of databases; ensure alignment and integration of data in adherence with data governance standards and identify any data issues.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

Knowledge & Experience
  • 5+ years of relevant experience and post-secondary degree in related field of study or an equivalent combination of education and experience in credit risk strategies for business banking.
  • In-depth knowledge of risk management theory, processes and portfolio management reporting techniques utilizing SAS/SQL (must have)
  • In-depth knowledge of modelling & analytics concepts and applications.
  • In-depth knowledge of risk systems technology preferred
  • In-depth product knowledge for Business Banking is an asset.
  • BMO organizational knowledge is an asset
  • Expertise in regulatory requirements is an asset
Skills
  • Strong financial, quantitative, and analytic skills to make data driven decisions
  • Strong statistical/mathematical skills including Multivariate Statistics, Regression, Decision Trees and Forecasting
  • In depth expertise with key technologies including SAS, SAS EM, SQL, Knowledge Studio, Python, Microsoft Products
  • Proven ability to apply expertise and creativity to solve complex problems
  • Excellent communication skills (oral and written)
  • Proven ability to build strong relationships within Risk, the Business and external partners
  • Proven ability to influence without authority, build alignment and drive change
  • Team-oriented, collaborative and flexible
  • Strong time management and project management skills
