Department/Faculty Summary

Community Service-Learning connects academic teaching, community engagement and research with communities for mutually beneficial purposes. Based in the Faculty of Arts, though serving other faculties on campus as well, CSL brokers community engaged learning and research opportunities for students, faculty, and community partners. CSL houses the Humanities 101 program.

Position Summary

The Humanities Program is a unique, inclusive adult educational access program that aims to bridge the University and Edmonton communities by providing meaningful on and off-campus university- level learning opportunities for adults who face social, political, and/or economic barriers to education. The Program facilitates regular offerings of interdisciplinary Arts (humanities and social sciences) courses (non-credit) co-taught by the Manager, Adult and Community and volunteer instructors, including full-time faculty, contract instructors, and graduate students. Currently, courses are offered both on campus and off campus at both WINGS of Providence, a second-stage women's shelter, and Edmonton Institution For Women, a federal penitentiary.

In addition to facilitating and teaching up to six non-credit courses per academic year and teaching one credit course per academic year for CSL (CSL 370), the position supports the University of Alberta libraries and Faculty of Native Studies through curriculum development and facilitation support within adult education and prison education programming. This includes the Walls to Bridges program, a credit-course housed in Native Studies or Women's and Gender Studies in Arts that facilitates undergraduate students learning and gaining credit along with learners inside the Edmonton Institution for Women. There is also regular consultation from faculty and students across the Faculty of Arts and the wider university for developing anti-oppressive, trauma-informed curriculum and facilitation practices. Reporting to the Director of Community Service-Learning, the Manager, Adult and Community Education will act as an academic leader for the various research, teaching and creative activity of faculty, including the co-production and dissemination of community based-knowledges and research products, utilizing critical methodologies and epistemologies and practice based knowledge.

Duties

  • Plan, create curriculum, administer and teach Humanities Program courses, with the goal of offering up to six course sections (non-credit) per year
  • Teach one (1), 3 credit-course per academic year for CSL (e.g. CSL 370)
  • Co-teach one (1) 3 credit-course per academic year for Walls to Bridges program, through the Faculty of Native Studies or Women's and Gender Studies/Arts
  • Develop and facilitate workshops on trauma-informed, anti-oppressive, asset-based pedagogy and practice. Workshops tailored for potential Humanities 101 volunteers, graduate students, and faculty who work with people who live and learn at multiple intersections of identity.
  • Model to and assist other faculty pedagogies appropriate to working with individuals at greater risk of emotional and educational injury than a conventional undergraduate student;
  • Maintain, and strengthen partnerships with WINGS, Correctional Service Canada, and approx. 30+ agencies to foster strong university-community linkages, to raise awareness in the community of learning opportunities, to recruit students for the program, ensure responsive programming, and learn how best to maintain a positive and engaging learning environment;
  • Produce cumulative knowledge creation projects with course learners. This includes printed materials, installations, art shows, and other public works;
  • Track and report program results and create annual report supplement;
  • Assemble, produce, and share end-of-term projects;
  • Organize and showcase student learning at end-of-term CSL celebration
  • Supervise one undergraduate Community Education Outreach Intern and one casual, part-time assistant position
Minimum Qualifications
  • Minimum of a Master's degree in a relevant discipline such as education, social sciences, humanities, social work or an interdisciplinary or applied field (PhD preferred, but a combination of graduate work and relevant community work may be considered equivalent).
  • Several years of experience in the non-profit community; with proven experience or expertise in areas such as community building, advocacy, intervention, prevention and supportive advising;
  • Demonstrated experience with de-escalation techniques and non-violent crisis intervention,
  • Understanding and managing behavior and crisis prevention;
  • Demonstrated experience in supporting diverse communities and instructing vulnerable or at risk learners
  • Demonstrated experience of developing program plans and facilitating and co-facilitating courses and curricula for adult learners in creative and interdisciplinary ways;
Preferred Qualifications
  • Facilitation and teaching skills that are strength-based and attend to people who have experienced violence;
  • Knowledge of resources available in the Edmonton community;
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and lead a team while managing competing priorities
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication (verbal and written) skills including strong ability to demonstrate professionalism, confidentiality, and diplomacy
  • Strong facilitation, critical thinking and problem solving skills
