United Nurses of Alberta (https://www.una.ca/) is the union for more than 35,000 Registered Nurses, Registered Psychiatric Nurses and allied workers in Alberta. We are dedicated to advocating for our dues payers, members, the nursing profession, and our public health care system, ensuring our dues payers are represented in bargaining, in their profession, and in disputes with employers and professional licensing bodies.

UNA is seeking an experienced, values driven professional to join our team as

Manager, Administrative Department

-- a position suited for a strategic thinker who thrives in complexity, builds trust through action, and advocates with both integrity and resolve.

The Manager will support frontline staff, resolve complex and often high-conflict issues, and mentor a team of Administrative Professionals.

The ideal candidate brings substantial experience in Managing, supporting and leading a team to the upmost success and the ability to lead with clarity, empathy, and confidence. This role requires resilience, emotional intelligence, and a steady hand under pressure.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE

Holds a bachelor's degree in Human Resources and or Business Administration. Is passionate about workplace collaboration. Excels at conflict resolution, strategic problem-solving, and clear communication. Leads with purpose, coaches with compassion, and acts decisively in complex situations.

Ability to set and maintain professional boundaries and manage expectations, ensuring work-life balance. Demonstrated ability to build and sustain trust with staff, local representatives, and regulatory bodies. Strategic thinker who analyzes trends and issues to provide insightful advice and innovative solutions aligned with organizational goals. Receive and respond to complaints from members, local representatives and staff. Implement and refine administrative procedures and systems to optimize efficiency and productivity. Manage facilities maintenance, building repairs and ensure the office is safe, secure and well maintained. Develop, communicate and enforce administrative policies and procedures to maintain order and consistency. Manage communication channels within the organization to ensure that all relevant information is shared effectively. Valid Class 5 driver's license required.

Primary Responsibilities:

Conduct regular meetings with administrative staff to ensure alignment and support. Manage recruitment, retention, development, and recognition of department members. Perform probationary reviews for new hires and conduct annual performance evaluations. Review and approve overtime, leave, and remote work requests. Coordinate coverage during extended staff absences. Oversee timesheet approval processes. Manage reception coverage for both PO and SARO locations. Represent the department at Board and District meetings in the absence of the Director of Finance and Administrative Services. Actively participate in operations meetings and contribute to organizational initiatives. Support development of educational materials and deliver training to members and staff. Provide oversight and leadership to all administrative staff in both Provincial and SARO offices. Regular travel between Provincial office and SARO office

Education & Experience

Bachelor's degree in Human Resources and or Business Administration (or equivalent experience). Extensive experience in within unionized or regulated sectors Demonstrated ability to resolve conflict, lead teams, and manage complex, time-sensitive issues with sound judgment. Excellent communication, and advocacy skills, both verbal and written. Valid Class 5 driver's licence and reliable access to a vehicle; provincial travel is required.

Preferred:

Experience supervising or mentoring staff in a union or professional setting.

Work Conditions & Travel

The work involves difficult conversations, competing priorities and frequent travel across Alberta. The manager must be able to attend meetings in person. Occasionally requires irregular working hours. Use of own vehicle for work-related travel.
