JOB SUMMARY:



1. The Maintenance Worker is accountable to the Administrator/Site Lead and the Director of Operations (title subject to change) for facility safety, preventative maintenance, inventory, contractor coordination, and upkeep of internal and external physical environments.

2. The Maintenance Worker also collaborates with the Director of Care in ensuring maintenance activities are conducted in a manner that minimizes disruption to resident care, supports infection control standards, and upholds resident safety and comfort.

QUALIFICATIONS:



High school diploma or equivalent (required).

Current WHMIS/GHS certification (required).

Valid driver's license (required).

1-2 years of relevant maintenance/building operations experience (required).

Basic computer skills for documentation and work order systems (required).

First Aid/CPR certification (preferred).

Formal training in trades (e.g., carpentry, plumbing, HVAC, or electrical) (preferred).

Experience in LTC, healthcare, or residential care settings (preferred).

Familiarity with preventative maintenance systems and documentation practices (preferred).

Knowledge of emergency systems, including fire panels and generators (preferred).

Knowledge of IPAC standards in healthcare settings (preferred).

Ability to perform basic repairs in carpentry, plumbing, electrical, painting, drywall, and appliance/furniture maintenance (essential).

Strong organizational skills and ability to complete routine building and safety checks independently.

High school diploma or equivalent (required).

Demonstrated skills in carpentry, plumbing, basic electrical, drywall repair, and general maintenance.

WHMIS/GHS certification and valid driver's license (required).

First Aid/CPR and formal trade training (preferred).

Minimum 1-2 years relevant experience in building operations or maintenance, ideally in a healthcare, LTC, or residential setting.

Familiarity with fire alarm and emergency systems, IPAC standards, and preventative maintenance schedules.

Basic computer skills for documentation and work order systems.

Good physical and mental health; ability to prioritize tasks and work independently or as part of a team.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:



1. Become familiar with local building codes, safety standards, IPAC guidelines, and provincial regulations relevant to long-term care operations.

2. Complete maintenance tasks as scheduled: daily, weekly, monthly, and seasonally.

3. Monitor the Maintenance Request Log and respond promptly to reported issues.

4. Perform environmental and fire safety inspections per schedule; ensure familiarity with facility fire/emergency procedures.

5. Test and maintain fire alarm systems, emergency lighting, call bell systems, and generators.

6. Maintain and adjust heating, cooling, and ventilation systems; ensure windows/screens are secure and functional.

7. Monitor and maintain water temperatures in accordance with LTC standards (e.g., 47.7C / 120F); repair or report plumbing issues.

8. Ensure appropriate lighting levels and repair fixtures, including exit signs and emergency lights.

9. Maintain resident call bell and paging systems in working order.

10. Perform minor repairs to electrical, dietary, and laundry equipment; escalate major repairs as required.

11. Lubricate and clean equipment on a preventative maintenance schedule.

12. Safely handle and dispose of garbage and maintenance waste in compliance with OHS and environmental protocols.

13. Carry out minor carpentry, drywall, tile, appliance, and furniture repairs as needed.

14. Maintain and repair mobility devices (e.g., wheelchairs, walkers, carts).

15. Assist with housekeeping support tasks such as window washing and seasonal deep cleaning.

16. Inventory supplies, track usage, and submit documentation to the Administrator.

17. Conduct errands on behalf of the Director of Care and Administrator (e.g., parts pickup, deliveries).

18. Maintain clean, organized storage areas and safe chemical storage practices.

19. Replenish maintenance, cleaning, and laundry supplies as needed.

20. Maintain accurate documentation of all maintenance activity, inspections, and follow-up actions.

21. Identify and address safety hazards reported by nursing or leadership promptly.

22. Support external contractors during inspections or repairs.

23. Maintain a clean, safe, and welcoming exterior and grounds.

24. Keep all tools and equipment in safe, working condition and store securely.

25. Wear and use personal protective equipment (PPE) as required and follow all OHS procedures.

26. Carry out other duties as assigned by the Administrator, Site Lead, or Director of Care in support of safe, person-centered operations.
