Halifax Harbour Bridges is a provincial Crown corporation that operates and maintains two bridges across the Halifax Harbour, the Angus L. Macdonald Bridge and the A. Murray MacKay Bridge. Approximately 105,000 vehicles cross the two bridges each workday, along with the hundreds of pedestrians and cyclists who use the active transportation lanes on the Macdonald Bridge. Role Summary:
Reporting directly to the Maintenance Manager and Maintenance Supervisor (temporarily) and working closely with other Maintenance Department staff, the Maintenance Supervisor (Paint) is responsible for coordinating and supervising the work of all Painters and Paint Attendants. The Maintenance Supervisor (Paint) is engaged in the overall maintenance and upkeep of HHB's all assets that require coatings (i.e. bridges, buildings, roadway markings and equipment), all while ensuring work crews are adhering to HHB's safety, scheduling, quality control and productivity standards.
Primary Responsibilities:
Supervise and coordinate paint/coatings staff within the Maintenance department across HHB's locations, ensuring work is performed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with HHB's approved standards, procedures, and quality requirements.
Conduct regular inspections of bridge structures and coatings work to assess condition, determine maintenance priorities, and ensure uniform application and surface preparation.
Provide daily leadership, coaching, and oversight of staff; review work performance; approve time records; and administer performance management in accordance with the collective agreement, HHB policies, and applicable legislation.
Ensure tools, equipment, materials, and coatings inventory are properly maintained, certified, stored, and available to support operational requirements as per HHB's standards.
Plan, schedule, and coordinate coatings work, including estimating labour and material requirements, approving costs, maintaining records and reports, and requisitioning supplies as needed.
Coordinate with Maintenance and Engineering staff to ensure safe and timely access to bridge structures, support collaborative team operations and effective completion of work.
Promote and enforce the organization's health and safety program by ensuring staff are trained, competent, and compliant with safe work practices, job safety assessments, and reporting requirements.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Valid Class 5 Nova Scotia Driver's License with a clean driving record; driver abstract required prior to hire.
Successful completion of physical demands assessment, employment reference checks, and, if required, a criminal background check.
Supervisory experience, preferably supervising unionized workers.
National Association of Corrosion Engineers (NACE) - Coatings Inspector Program (CIP) Level 2 or higher.
Experience supervising lead paint removal and working in a safety-sensitive position.
Ability to work efficiently and safely while maintaining high-quality workmanship and excellent customer service.
Intermediate computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite.
Knowledge of applicable regulations and demonstrated punctuality, dependability, and a positive, can-do attitude.
Physical Requirements:
This role requires physically demanding work, including lifting (up to 25 lbs frequently, 50 lbs occasionally). Additional tasks may involve varying levels of intensity in activities such as standing/walking for 6-7 hours per day, lifting, climbing, balancing, bending, kneeling, crouching, reaching overhead/forward/side, kneeling and other physical activities as required.
Working Conditions:
This is a safety-sensitive position requiring work in physically demanding environments and exposure to varying intensity levels. Work is performed at extreme heights (170-320 feet), in confined or restricted spaces above and below bridge decks, often with limited direct supervision. Exposure to variable and extreme weather conditions, high noise levels (grinders, pneumatic tools, bridge traffic), vibration, dust, fumes, unpleasant odours, lead (respirators required), and flammable/explosive materials. Position may involve mental stress due to conflicting demands, hazardous situations, working alone, and attention to safety-critical tasks. Requires adherence to strict safety protocols and use of personal protective equipment to ensure safe operation at all times.
About the position: This is a Full-time, Permanent, Non-Union position. The hours of work are 40 hours per week, however, the role does require occasional extended hours. The comprehensive compensation package includes health, dental benefits, insurance coverage and a defined benefit pension plan.
Annual Salary: The annual compensation for this role is $74,185.65.
