This position works full-time hours of 40 hours per week in regularly scheduled shifts. However, on-call duty is required for this position on a weekly rotation based on operational needs (currently every 6-7 weeks as required).
About the job

Working as part of a small maintenance team at the Maplehurst Correctional Complex, you will enjoy a variety of tasks as well as a steady work schedule. In this role you can expect to:
Provide skilled trades and general maintenance services
Perform duties such as: locksmith, electrical, plumbing, small motor repairs, carpentry, air conditioning, welding, etc.
Instruct staff and inmate helpers on maintenance tasks and safe use of hand tools and power equipment
Assist other skilled tradespeople
Review blueprints and specifications
Participate and assist on maintenance projects
This position works within a secure correctional facility and will oftentimes work within the vicinity of and around inmates.

Mandatory requirements
You are certified in one of the skilled trades as recognized by the Ontario Government or possess equivalent experience
You are First Aid and Heart Saver certified

Skilled Trades Knowledge and Experience:
You can:
use your advanced knowledge of at least one skilled trade to perform maintenance tasks (e.g. carpentry, welding, or plumbing)
use your knowledge of other skilled and semi-skilled trades to perform a variety of maintenance tasks (ie, painting, replacing locks, drywall repair)
operate and maintain heating, ventilation, air conditioning and fire systems, as well as instrumentation and control systems
interpret, organize and complete blueprints, schematics, specification diagrams and drawings

Legislative Knowledge:
You can:
interpret and apply relevant legislation, municipal by-laws and codes, and provincial building codes
learn and apply correctional facility security requirements (i.e., lockouts, tagouts and elevated work procedures)
understand and apply the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS), Occupational Health and Safety Act, and institutional security practices and procedures to recognize workplace hazards and security breaches, and ensure prompt corrective action

discuss work projects with others and ensure work is completed on time
complete reports on assigned projects and maintain accurate logs
give instructions on the safe use of power equipment and hand tools
access information about warranty and service agreements
prepare reports and respond to inquiries
