Maintenance Assistant

Job Description

Reporting to the Maintenance Manager at Brighton Retirement Living, the Maintenance Assistant is responsible for performing routine maintenance and repair tasks to ensure the retirement home remains safe, functional, and comfortable for all residents, staff, and visitors. This role supports the day-to-day upkeep of the building, equipment, and grounds while providing friendly, respectful service in a resident-focused environment.




Duties and Responsibilities:





General Maintenance





Perform routine inspections, repairs, and maintenance of HVAC systems, plumbing, electrical, lighting, doors, and furniture. Complete work orders efficiently and document completed tasks according to established procedures. Participate in scheduled preventative maintenance programs for building systems and equipment. Maintain tools and equipment in good working condition. Assist with landscaping, snow removal, salting walkways, and maintaining exterior cleanliness. Keep indoor common areas such as hallways, lobbies, and mechanical rooms clean and organized. Prepare and maintain vacant suites for new residents, including painting, fixture checks, and basic repairs. Assist in setting up or rearranging rooms and common spaces for events or facility needs. Work closely with housekeeping, nursing, and administration to maintain a high standard of living and care for residents. Attend team meetings and contribute to continuous improvement of maintenance procedures. Monitor and maintain inventory of maintenance supplies and equipment. Assist in ordering and restocking supplies as needed.




Resident Support and Service





Respond courteously and promptly to resident maintenance requests, including minor repairs and adjustments within resident suites Treat all residents with respect and ensure minimal disruption during maintenance activities.


Risk Management and General Safety





Ensure that all maintenance tasks comply with safety, fire, and health regulations. Identify and report safety hazards or maintenance concerns proactively. Assist with fire drills, emergency preparedness, and compliance audits. Partner with community team to ensure community is in compliance with Occupational Health and Safety requirements and promotion of risk management programs and/or policies; adherence to safety rules and regulations. Practice safety procedures at all times including Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), fire safety procedures including extinguishers, Safety Data Sheets (SDSs) and lockout tagout procedures. Report all accidents and incidents immediately. Report all unsafe and hazardous conditions and/or equipment immediately. Comply with all infection control techniques, placement of biohazard containers and removal techniques, procedures and policies. Participate in fire safety and mock disaster procedures.


Other





Works in a safe manner and ensures department operations are carried out in a safe manner in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, associated regulations, Legacy Living policies, procedures, and other associated legislation. Other related duties, as assigned.



Physical Demands




Standing for extended periods of time - for up to 8hrs/day Frequent walking for short to medium distances Manoeuvring in tight spaces within Resident units, utility rooms, mechanical rooms, etc. Pulling/pushing/reaching/bending/lifting/transferring chemical pails, mechanical parts, etc., up to 50lbs independently and handling increased weight with assistive devices. Kneeling for intervals Frequent exposure to outdoor working conditions in all types of climates and weather Working at heights - use of ladders up to 12 ft, working on rooftop units located outdoors Ability to complete repetitive arm and upper body motions in intervals for shovelling, nailing, etc. Ability to work in a kneeling position for 30 min intervals Some memory work required to know inner workings of mechanical systems, location of valves, pipes, etc.



The successful candidate will possess the following:



Education




Secondary school diploma or equivalent.



License, Certifications, Training and Clearances



Valid and unrestricted Class "G" driver's license with access to reliable transportation. Police Record Check (per RHA), including Vulnerable Sector Check. Valid First Aid and CPR certification. Immunization(s) and tuberculosis (TB) testing, per Brighton Retirement Living's policy.



Experience




Experience in general maintenance, building repair or facilities support, ideally in a residential or healthcare environment. Some training in repair trades such as electrical, plumbing, air conditioning, etc. considered an asset.



Knowledge, Skills and Abilities



Working knowledge of HVAC, plumbing, electrical and carpentry. Familiar with workplace safety and infection control standards. Ability to use maintenance tools and equipment safely and effectively. Knowledgeable of budget management. Strong communication and interpersonal skills, especially when interacting with residents. Physical ability to lift, bend, stand and perform manual labour.




A combination of education, training and experience may be considered.
