The Machinist Operator (Apprenticeship Track) is an entry-level position designed for individuals interested in developing a long-term career in CNC machining. Working under the direct supervision of experienced Red Seal Machinists, the Operator assists with daily machining operations, learns the fundamentals of precision manufacturing, and gradually takes on more responsibility as skills develop. This role forms the foundation for advancement into an official apprenticeship and eventual Red Seal certification.
Key Responsibilities
Machine Operation & Production Support
Operate CNC mills and lathes under close supervision to produce components according to setup sheets and work instructions.
Load and unload raw materials, fixtures, and parts safely and efficiently.
Conduct basic visual and dimensional inspections using calipers, micrometers, and gauges.
Record in-process data and communicate any quality or process issues promptly.
Maintain machine cleanliness and perform minor maintenance (chip removal, coolant checks, etc.).
Learning & Development
Participate in structured on-the-job training focused on machining fundamentals, tool identification, measurement, and setup processes.
Shadow senior machinists to gain exposure to CNC programming concepts, tool offsets, and fixture alignment.
Progressively develop toward independent operation and setup capability.
Demonstrate initiative and curiosity by asking questions and engaging in problem-solving.
Workplace Organization & Safety
Maintain a clean, organized work area in accordance with SPI's 5S standards.
Follow all company safety policies and procedures, including PPE use and hazard reporting.
Participate in shop improvement activities, red-tag reviews, and safety meetings.
Support continuous improvement by identifying small process improvements.
Teamwork & Communication
Work cooperatively with production, QC, and leadership teams to ensure smooth workflow.
Maintain respectful communication with peers and mentors.

Qualifications & Experience
Strong mechanical aptitude and demonstrated interest in machining or manufacturing.
High school diploma or equivalent required.
Previous experience in a workshop or production environment is an asset but not required.
Basic understanding of measurement tools and mechanical drawings preferred.
Ability to stand for long periods and perform light to moderate lifting.
Dependable, punctual, and eager to learn.
Development Pathway

formal CNC Machinist Apprenticeship
with Straightline Precision Industries. Performance, initiative, and skill development will determine progression milestones.
